UNKNOWN: BABY PARADE ATLANTIC
UNKNOWN: BABY PARADE ATLANTIC CITY 1899 Silver bromide print. Baby parades began in Asbury Park in 1890 and were all the rage on the boardwalks of the Jersey Shore. At first the children were simply dressed in their Sunday best and pushed along in their carriages or pulled in little red wagons. Over time costumes and decorated carriages became the norm only to be eclipsed by elaborate floats and supplement entertainment provided by marching bands. The first show had 46 participants competing for the title of prettiest cutest or fattest! Post WWII the hopeful candidates numbered in the thousands. Today hundreds join the boardwalk promenade and receive a tiny trophy for participating. There is no longer a prize for the fattest baby and the diaper changing competition has been phased out. Provenance: Property from the Collection of Gerald Kornblau. 9 x 6 7/8 in. 13 1/8 x 17 1/4 in. (frame).
