Antanas Brazdys (Lithuanian, b.1939); stainless steel modernist sculpture in the style of Brancusi; 32 1/2"H; engraved signature at base with IV/V. Brazdys was born in Lithuania, educated in the United States at the Art Institute of Chicago, and especially well known in England, where he has lived since 1961. He has had one man shows in London and New York, along with many important group exhibitions. Among his commissions: a sculpture for the Woodgate House, London, entitled "Ritual," the entrance feature for the British Pavilion, Expo 1970, Japan, and for Harlow New Town, England, entitled "Echo."

Together with a hardback book titled "Painting with Oils" by Warren Brandt. Biography: Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Warren Brandt studied with Max Beckmann and Philip Guston, and had ties to the Abstract Expressionists in New York. He attended Pratt Institute, the Art Students League, and was an official Army portraitist during World War II. He taught at several universities and headed the Art Department at Salem College from 1949-1950. Provenance: the estate of Lucille Svitzer Brady (Mrs. Frank B. Brady), formerly of Annapolis, Maryland.

The primary subject, a mature man in a hat and vest (as viewed through a window), has just poured a glass of ale from a tankard and is peering out the window, while a second man stands in the shadows behind him. Signed F. De Braekeleer lower right. Housed in a period, possibly original, composition and giltwood frame with carved pear in cartouche ornamentation at the front corners. 9" x 7" sight, 18" x 15-1/2" framed. Note: Like his brother Henri, Ferdinand de Braeckeleer the younger followed in the foosteps of his renowned artist father (also named Ferdinand, 1792-1883), but he died young, and little is known about his further training or exhibition history.
Condition:
Painting does not appear to have been relined or cleaned; slightly darkened varnish. Frame has scattered losses to molding and repairs to corner ornamentation and appears to have been regilded.
