JOHN SPEED 1676 MAP OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, AND CHESAPEA...A MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND by John Speed, 1676, engraved by Francis Lamb. London: Thomas Basset and Richard Chiswell. Hand colored. In addition to showing parts of Virginia and Maryland, the map also shows portions of Carolina to the left margin and "New Jarsy" (sic) to the right. The direction of the north is to the right, and Native American Indian words for the Chesapeake Bay are used to identify various bodies of water and other landmarks. British armorial cartouche for the reigns of James I through James II (1603-1688) appear in the upper left corner, and below the coat of arms is a cartouche containing the scale of the map in English miles. The reverse side includes printed text descriptions of both Virginia and Maryland. Framed under glass. Sight: 15 3/4" H x 20 3/8" W. Framed: 17 1/2" H x 22" W. Note: this double page map was originally bound as part of John Speed's "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine."
Condition:
Some scattered areas of damp staining and overall light toning. Faint fold line to the vertical mid-section and very slight rippling to paper lower right quadrant. Not examined out of the frame.
