1777 RESOLUTION TO EXTEND GRACE,
1777 RESOLUTION TO EXTEND GRACE, IMPORTANTHistorically significant document, one of only a couple of dozen handwritten copies circulated to New York counties in 1777. This was a resolution to accept people back into the good graces of the United States who had previously turned against it. Measures 12-3/4" x 8". Archival tape repairs straight across one fold and at the ends of another fold. Irregular 1/2" chip/tear along side, not affecting text on obverse, but affecting some words on the reverse. Signed at the end by John McKesson, Secretary of the New York Provincial Congress. A fascinating piece, which reads, in part: "Whereas divers persons, inhabitants of this state have for notorious disaffection to the Liberties of America ... been sent into ... one of the neighboring states ... and whereas divers of the said persons have by their humble petition to this convention prayed to be admitted as liege subjects of this state testifying their determined resolution to exert their utmost endeavors in its defence ... whereas this convention is at all times desirous of restoring to society all those members who have not by their crimes rendered themselves unworthy of being partakers in the exalted Privileges of Freemen ... Resolved that the commissioners appointed within this state to enquire into, detect and defeat all Plots and Conspiracies against the Rights and Liberties of America within this state ... they hereby are directed and impowered to send for all such persons ... excepting those who are charged with taking up arms against the United States, with enlisting men for the service of the Enemy ... supplying them with Provision or conveying Intelligence to them, and that they do tender to each of them an Oath, or if they be of the People called Quakers, an affirmation, that he will bear true faith and Allegiance to the State of New York, that he will discover all Plots and Conspiracies which may come to his knowledge against the said state or the United States of America ..." (Full text of this document can be found in the first volume of the Journals of the Provincial Congress of New York, accessible via Google Books. A copy of the page will be included with the document.)
Provenance: Obtained directly from a collection of historical paper items -- from the Ashfield, Skaats and McNeal families of New York -- none of which has ever been offered for sale. Several lots of these papers, including historically important pieces, are being offered in today's auction. The family, represented in several of the items in the collection, owned land directly adjacent to Wall Street, and some of the pieces refer to these parcels.
