Carved oak wall hanging depicting
Carved oak wall hanging depicting St Mary Magdalene holding a chalice, Early Christian tradition holds that Jesus' follower Mary Magdalene collected Christ's blood in a sacred vessel after the Crucifixion.
Originally called the Marian Chalice, meaning the Chalice of Mary Magdalene, Mary's sacred vessel was believed to have been sealed up in Jesus’ empty tomb where it remained for almost four hundred years. After the Roman emperor Constantine the Great converted to Christianity in the early fourth century, his mother the Empress Helena ordered the excavation of the Holy Sepulchre, the purported site of Christ’s tomb in Jerusalem. During the excavation a cup was found which many believed to be the Marian Chalice. It was taken to Rome where it was believed to possess miraculous healing powers. The Marian Chalice, or Chalice of Magdalene, remained in Rome until the city was sacked by the barbarians in AD 410. Along with other treasures, it was taken from the city in an armed convoy of carts and brought to the safety of Britain, the last outpost of Roman civilization in Western Europe. What then happened to the sacred relic went unrecorded, but well into the Middle Ages the legend persisted that it was still hidden somewhere in the British Isles. some splits and minor losses, probably Continental, 18th c or earlier, 24" high

A JAPANESE BUDDHIST PRIEST
A JAPANESE BUDDHIST PRIEST BULLION AND BLUE SILK BROCAD...A JAPANESE BUDDHIST PRIEST BULLION AND BLUE SILK BROCADE KESA ROBE, 18TH/19TH CENTURY, of rectangular form and a conforming broad panels border of repeating spread winged phoenix partially covering blossoming paulownia foliage in colors of pale blue, soft golden yellow, copper red and burnt orange on a silvery gray ground, enclosing vertical rows and square form patches continuing same phoenix and paulownia foliage pattern, professionally mounted within a custom acrylic shadow box and giltwood frame. Height: 43 1/2" Width: 71 1/2" Note: The repeating phoenix partially shading the blossoming paulownia foliage pattern points to the original ownership of this textile as having been the Empress symbolized by the phoenix and her ancestral Fujiwara family symbolized by the blossoming paulownia foliage. Furthermore the paulownia blossoms traditionally have two three bud stems flanking a central five bud stem, but the paulownia blossoms used exclusively by the Empress and her Fujiwara family are two five bud stems flanking a seven bud stem which are found in this repeating pattern. This suggests that this was originally a textile used by the Empress or commissioned by her and then given as a gift to a Buddhist monk or shrine, where it was then cut and assembled according to the traditional rules for a Japanese kesa robe. Historically the Japanese Emperor always selected his wife Empress from the Fujiwara family. Provenance: Property from a Fortune 500 Energy Company, Houston, Texas.

Overall good gently worn condition with some expected stains, discolored areas, small holes, wear, loose threads, splits, old repairs and slightly faded throughout. FRAMED INDIAN MINIATURE PORTRAIT PAINTING19th century, depicting Empress Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Shah Jahan in elaborate robes and headdress, sight 2-1/2 x 2 in.; in carved and gilt wood oval frame, 3 x 2-1/2 in.
Note: Mumtaz Mahal (lit.?'the exalted one of the Palace'), born Arjumand Banu Begum (27 April 1593 ? 17 June 1631) was the empress consort of the Mughal Empire from 19 January 1628 to 17 June 1631 as the chief consort of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The Taj Mahal in Agra, often cited as one of the Wonders of the World, was commissioned by her husband to act as her tomb. Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631 in Burhanpur, Deccan (present-day Madhya Pradesh), during the birth of her 14th child, a daughter named Gauhar Ara Begum. Shah Jahan had the Taj Mahal built as a tomb for her, which is considered to be a monument of undying love. As with other Mughal royal ladies, no contemporary likenesses of her are accepted, but numerous imagined portraits were created from the 19th century onwards.

CHINESE PORTRAITS, YUAN DYNASTY
CHINESE PORTRAITS, YUAN DYNASTY EMPEROR & EMPRESSEach Imperial figure well painted on fabric, presumably silk, mounted to a press board back, with fabric border, each contains textured detailing with white painted beading. Measuring 51 by 28 in., overall, 55.5 by 32 in. Provenance: Property of The Haggstrom Trust, Jupiter, FL cf. The portrait of the Emperor from the offered pair bares the greatest resemblance to The Seventh Great Mongol Khan, Khayishan Kulug Khan, the 3rd Emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, known as Emperor Wuzong (1307- 1311). The majority of extant portraits of all of the Mongol Emperors and Empresses of the Yuan Dynasty are painted in a similar fashion. A relatively somber palette in tones of orange, brown, cream and beige predominate. Painted surfaces are rendered primarily with flat coloring and linear outlining. The portraits depict the sitter wearing relatively simple outer garments with the same headdress, in some portraits the Empresses distinctive headdress is rendered in red. Unlike in the offered pair of Yuan Dynasty portraits, the Emperor and Empress are often depicted from chest upward. Indicators of wealth, often depicted in the portraits of later Ming and Qing Dynasty Imperial and high-ranking officials such as excessive jewelry, grand thrones, colorful robes and complex backgrounds are noticeably lacking in the Yuan Dynasty portraits of court officials.
