1 vol. (Carey, Mathew, printer & publisher.) The Holy Bible Translated from the Latin Vulgate. Philadelphia, 1790. 2 vols. in 1. 4to, orig. blind-tooled sheep, red morocco spine label; rubbed, joints tender. Moderate to heavy dampstaining to endpapers, front & back matter - including title page, other occasional dampstaining, scattered light to moderate foxing, ink stamp on title. With custom cloth fall-down box. Complete with terminal blank. This is the first American edition of the first English-language translation of the Roman Catholic Vulgate Bible, printed & published by the first Catholic of prominence in those trades in America. St. Jerome's 4th-Century Latin-translation of the Bible - the Vulgate - was first translated into English at the English college in Douai, France & published there in 1582 (the New Testament) & 1609 (the Old Testament). This translation has been known since as The Douay Bible. Mathew Carey was born in Dublin, Ireland on January 28th, 1760 as the son of a wealthy baker; he died in Philadelphia on September 15th, 1839 as one of the most prominent printer-publishers in the United States. Embarking on a career as a journalist & pamphleteer, the political repercussions of his anonymously published 1779 pamphlet, "Urgent Necessity of an Immediate Repeal of the Whole Penal Code against Roman Catholics" caused the 19 year old Carey to seek refuge in France, where he met the Marquis de Lafayette & worked in the printing office of Benjamin Franklin. After his return to Ireland, he conducted Dublin's Freeman's Journal & founded the radical paper, The Volunteer's Journal. Imprisoned in 1784 for an article attacking Parliament, Carey, upon his release later that year, left Ireland in disguise and emigrated to America. With the help of Lafayette, he established himself as a printer and publisher in Philadelphia. Five years later, Carey announced plans to publish a Roman Catholic Douay-Rheims version English Bible; 471 subscribers were secured & the Bible was published on December 1, 1790. This edition of no more than 500 copies was not only the first English-language Catholic Bible published in America, but also the first non-King James version English-language Bible in America, as well as the first in a quarto format. JOHANN PETER HASENCLEVER OIL ON
JOHANN PETER HASENCLEVER OIL ON CANVASJOHANN PETER HASENCLEVER (Germany, 1810-1853) oil on canvas, "Der erste Schultag" (First Day of School) also known by alternate title, "Lassetdie Kinderlein zu mir" (Let the Children Come to Me). Featuring a rural mid-19th century German classroom in chaos and pandemonium. A father holding a basket of egg, a dead rooster, and pushing his son forward to present to an elderly teacher occupied with spanking a screaming child over his knee. The school children are clearly out of the teacher's control with some crying, some hiding, one boy drawing a donkey on the wall, some laughing, one boy with his fist up in anger, and a few students in the background studiously reading and writing. The classroom itself is deteriorating with holes and debris on the floor, chipped and stained plaster, a torn map of Europe, piles of books in disarray, and a violin with broken strings. Signed "J.P. Hasenclever" lower right. Image measures 35" x 44". In a wood frame; 40.5" x 49.5" overall. Provenance: passed down within the family.
