EARLY BALI INDONESIAN CARVED SAWO
EARLY BALI INDONESIAN CARVED SAWO WOOD SCULPTUREFeatured in this lot is a Early Vintage Bali Indonesian hand-carved Sawo wood Sculpture. It depicts a celebrated tale from the Hindu epic, Ramayana, a commonly found theme in Balinese woodworking. The sculpture depicts a pivotal portion of the great Hindu epic, "Hanuman and the Monkeys Battle Kumbhakarna". The Ramayana’s protagonist is Rama. His beloved wife has been kidnapped by Ravana. Rama and his monkey army retaliate, but the thousands of simians are no match for the ferocious Kumbhakarna. The carnage continues until Rama himself, employing his most mighty powers, is able to bring down the colossal beast. This wood sculpture was created 3-dimensional of one solid 9.25" diameter block of wood, additional figures are exhibited on the "reverse" side. Woodcarving has been a traditional art in Bali, Indonesia. Bali is known for master carvers and sculptors that create and produce intricately beautiful works of art made from durable wood. wood carving, which required more skills and is more refined than stone work, only started around 12th century. At that time, the style was a mix of Buddhist and Hindu influence. Traditionally, wood carvings are carved in honour of Hindu gods or for use in cremation ceremonies. Typically woods used include teak, chempaka and sandalwood with coarse grains. Each piece is unique and involves intricate carving on both sides of each block of wood. Much of this craftwork takes place in woodcarving's golden triangle, bounded by the villages of Mas, Ubud, and Gianyar. Fantastic intricate details, amazing craftsmanship, even the sides are carved, the masks and headgear details and the tree detail are incredible. Sculpture is in very good, vintage condition with slight chips. Measurements are approximately 24"H x 9.25"W x 5"D, weight approximate 17lb, 8oz

RARE SET MIXTEC SILVER BELLS -
RARE SET MIXTEC SILVER BELLS - MONKEY HEAD FORM (4)Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A charming ensemble of 4 silver bells, all in the form of monkey heads. Each of the adorable simians presents annular eyes beneath an arched brow, large, openwork nostrils, and a smiling open mouth, all flanked by a pair of coil-form ears, each suspending a spherical bell. A spiraling adornment projects from the center of each brow, while an additional bell hangs from each chin. All of the ancient animals feature a sizable suspension loop at the top of their heads and produce lovely music when shaken! Size (all about the same): 1.8" W x 2.5" H (4.6 cm x 6.4 cm)
The Mixtec artisans were masters of metallurgy, surpassing other Mesoamerican cultures in craftsmanship. Metallurgy was introduced into the region around 900 CE. Mesoamericans used metals for ornamentation, though their tools and weaponry remained Neolithic. Many experts agree that Mixtec metal wares set the standard for Mesoamerican cultures.
Monkeys were prevalent in the Mesoamerican lowlands, with the two most common species being the howler monkey and the spider monkey. However, the monkeys depicted on hachas are highly stylized, abstracting the monkey's essential characteristics. Monkeys were represented often in various art forms, including stone pedestal sculptures, mushroom stones, architectural reliefs, ceramic figures, whistles, and effigy vessels, as well as hachas for the traditional ballgame.

20TH C. BALINESE PAINTED WOOD MASK,
20TH C. BALINESE PAINTED WOOD MASK, MONKEYSoutheast Asia, Indonesia, Java or Bali, ca. late 20th century CE. An expressive wooden festival mask with painted motifs and raffia fiber hair details. The fierce face represents a monkey figure that is part of the Ramayana story and may even represent Hanuman, the monkey companion to Rama. The mask verso has a clever woven wood domed frame shaped like a cap that is covered with a cloth and raffia which nearly completely hides the wearer's head. The lower jaw is a separate piece that is attached with slightly flexible plates, that allow the jaw to wobble to create a more animated visage. Masks like this example have been worn for centuries during dramatic dances for festivals, and the Ramayana is a popular reenactment, as it is one of the largest Hindu epics that narrates the life of Rama. Size (mask): 10" L x 9" W (25.4 cm x 22.9 cm); (raffia strands): 14" L (35.6 cm)

14TH C. CHINESE MING STONE
14TH C. CHINESE MING STONE WANGZHU MONKEY EATING PEACHEast Asia, China, Ming dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A large stone baluster or pillar, known in Chinese as "wangzhu," featuring a monkey and two offspring eating fruit. The simian creature is crouched on a plinth while hunched forward as she brings the fruit to her mouth, and upon her back are two babies clinging to her shoulders. The fruit has traces of a yellow pigment, and may be a peach, which is a Buddhist symbol. Monkeys are also an auspicious animal and appear as Buddhist symbols of longevity. The monkey king Sun Wukong was made the Guardian of the Heavenly Peach Garden, which had three types of mythical peaches that could grant immortality and other powers. Sun Wukong ate the peaches and gained this immortal power and other abilities, which upset some other mythical beings. These monkeys are also immortalized in this lovely stone monument! Size: 7" L x 8" W x 20" H (17.8 cm x 20.3 cm x 50.8 cm)
Ming Dynasty architects continued the Chinese tradition of having important buildings - towers, pavilions, palaces, meeting halls, etc. - built atop terraces, requiring a walk up a grand stone staircase to reach them. These are bordered by balustrades punctuated by balusters. Most famously, the group of buildings known as San Da Dian (The Three Great Halls) at the Forbidden City in Beijing, feature 1460 balusters. Viewed from a distance, these balusters resemble a stone forest.
