ALEXANDER VIII GILT BRONZE PAPAL
ALEXANDER VIII GILT BRONZE PAPAL MEDAL SCUDO 1690 - HAM...17th century Italian gilt bronze papal medal or scudo, 1690, with the obverse depicting a bust of Pope Alexander VIII (born as Pietro Vito Ottoboni, 1610-1691), and the reverse depicting billowing incense. It was sculpted by Giovanni Martino Hamerani (ca. 1646-1705), of the two-century Hamerani dynasty that dominated Vatican coinage for a long time. The obverse shows Pope Alexander VIII wearing a papal tiara and a picture of Saint Bruno along his collar. The text surrounding him below a dotted border reads "ALEXAN VIII. PONT. M. A. I." with the sculptor's signature "HAMERAN" along the lower left. The reverse depicts a censer blowing out smoke, surrounded by text beneath a dotted border that reads "SVAVITATE," which means "with suavitas," or sweetness. This was the motto of Pope Alexander VIII who prided himself on being like a Robin Hood figure, redistributing the wealth of the Vatican and giving it to the poor. However, he was greatly nepotistic in that a great amount of the wealth and offices were given to his relatives, such as Pietro Ottoboni, his grandnephew. Diameter: 1 1/4 in.

LEONARD BASKIN "DRAWING FOR THE
LEONARD BASKIN "DRAWING FOR THE ILIAD" PORTFOLIO (1962)...Leonard Baskin (1922-2000). "Drawings for the Iliad" (Delphic Arts, New York City, 1962) including 60 lithographs after drawings by Baskin. Accompanied by 6 original etchings (2 impressions each of "Hephaistos", "Ares", and "Homer") hand-signed in pencil by Baskin, 3 numbered XLII/LX (42 of 60) in pencil + page from edition XLII (42) of a deluxe portfolio of 150 lithographs after Baskin's pen and ink wash drawings published by Delphic Arts in New York that same year (also with the title "Drawings for the Illiad") that reads in part, "150 copies … have been published … The paper throughout is Fabriano … text … printed at the Gehenna Press … quotations are Lattimore’s translation … The edition has been arranged as follows. Copies number one through ninety are accompanied by three original etchings by Leonard Baskin. Copies numbred I-LX have an extra suite of etchings …" All is protected in an original 1962 Delphic Arts portfolio cover. Size (portfolio): 26.875" L x 20.625" W (68.3 cm x 52.4 cm)
According to Princeton University Special Collections, Firestone Library, Graphic Arts Collection (where all the variations of publications reproducing Baskin's drawings have been collected): " Richard Lattimore's now-classic translation of Homer's The Iliad was first published by the University of Chicago Press in 1951. A decade later, the Press invited the artist Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) to produce drawings for a lavish illustrated edition, which came out in 1962. That same year a deluxe portfolio of 150 lithographs [seen at the top] after Baskin’s pen and ink wash drawings was published by Delphic Arts in New York, with the title Drawings for the Iliad. The first 90 copies included an additional three etchings, which were also distributed separately (two copies of each etchings) under the same title. If that isn't complicated enough, an exhibition of Baskin's drawings traveled to multiple venues in 1962 and an exhibition catalogue published under the same title.
Leonard Baskin was a 20th century "Renaissance Man" - a highly respected sculptor, printmaker, writer, and watercolorist. His prints included mythological, classical, and biblical scenes as well as portraits and floral studies. Baskin studied at Yale University from 1941 to 1943 and received his B.A. at the New School for Social Research in 1949. He also founded Gehenna Press which specialized in fine book production and taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts as well as Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts from 1953 until 1974. Baskin's artworks are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Vatican Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, the Tate Gallery in London, and other elite institutions. His noted public sculptural commissions include pieces for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial as well as the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Baskin also received many prestigious honors, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award. He was also honored with numerous retrospective exhibitions at institutions including the Smithsonian Museum, the Albertina Museum, and the Library of Congress.

Leonard Baskin created two series of lithographs that depict 19th century Native Americans, including illustrious individuals such as Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Geronimo. His poignant portraits convey these sitters' noble qualities as well as the despair and loss experienced by these people. This project began when Leonard Baskin was asked to illustrate a handbook for Custer National Park (now called Little Big-Horn National Park). Since Baskin actually detested Custer, he instead opted to create portraits of Native American chiefs and leaders that conveyed their bravery and intelligence like this example. Size of sight view: 23.875" L x 17.875" W (60.6 cm x 45.4 cm) Size of frame: 31.5" L x 25.5" W (80 cm x 64.8 cm)
Leonard Baskin was a creative force for more than 5 decades and worked in a variety of media; however, he is best known for sizeable works on paper like this example. "Geronimo" is rendered in Baskin's characteristically expressive manner and grand scale. It is among Baskin's figurative prints that rivaled the works of Abstract Expressionists during his day, set in a custom frame and hand signed.
Baskin was a 20th century "Renaissance Man" - a highly respected sculptor, printmaker, writer, and watercolorist. "Angel of Death" has been collected by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art among others (accession numbers 1971.300, 1971.25, and 1961-157-4 respectively).

1960S LEONARD BASKIN ORIGINAL
1960S LEONARD BASKIN ORIGINAL WOOD BLOCK - "ICARUS"Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000). "Icarus" hand-carved wooden block for creating woodcuts, ca. 1967 to 1968. An impressively large original block for Leonard Baskin's "Icarus" mounted in a custom frame. Baskin's hand-carved image presents the Greek mythological figure's misshapen body with distorted limbs and torso - as seen from above and perhaps falling - surrounded by his ruffled wings that would only result in an ill-fated flight, rendered in an oval format inscribed within the rectangular block. The block floats against a linen-covered matte and is mounted within an attractive custom frame. Size (block): 32" L x 22.125" W (81.3 cm x 56.2 cm) Size (frame): 42" L x 32.125" W (106.7 cm x 81.6 cm)
In 2019, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California presented, "A Passionate Muse: The Art of Leonard Baskin" and the press release discussed Baskin's Icarus, "Against the grain of the mainstream art world, which at the time prized Abstract Expressionism as exemplified by artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Baskin made the human figure his main vehicle for expression. He did so throughout his career. Myth and literature that explore humanity’s foibles, failings, and triumphs provided subjects for later prints, such as 1968’s Icarus. Though it is tempting to relate its creation to the upheaval and disappointments of 1968, its meaning is more universal. His close friend and collaborator, the poet Ted Hughes, says, 'The scope he embraces, the depth he searches, the specific pain he locates, the light he casts on what he finds, and his treatment of it, present us with what we might well call uncommon forms.'"

SIGNED 19TH C. ITALIAN AGATE
SIGNED 19TH C. ITALIAN AGATE CAMEO OF TUCCIA, GIROMETTI...Western Europe, Italy, Neoclassical period, ca. early 19th century CE. Signature on lower left periphery. A gorgeous signed agate cameo by Italian engraver Giuseppe Girometti (1780 -1851) featuring a skillfully sculpted image of Tuccia, the Roman Vestal Virgin who was accused of adultery and proved her innocence by carrying water in a flat, perforated basket without any falling to the ground through the sieve. The elegant beauty strides right, her flowing robes swirling around her in graceful wisps, perhaps alluding to the flowing nature of the liquid she carries, as she turns to her right, looking down at the shallow basket. The strap of her peplos teasingly slips down her right shoulder, almost exposing her bare breast. Note the artist's careful attention to detail in each billowing fold of the cascading fabric, as well as the Classical features of her visage and the intricate twists of her chignon. Easily set into a pendant, ring, or brooch for a stunning, wearable piece of history! Size: 1" L x 0.7" W (2.5 cm x 1.8 cm)
Giuseppe Girometti was an accomplished engraver and works by him can be found in many renowned collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), the Vatican Museums, and the British Museum.
