P. SMITH SCULPTURE "THE
P. SMITH SCULPTURE "THE MYSTERIOUS VOICE OF ANTIQUITY"Prescott Smith (American, Contemporary). "The Mysterious Voice of Antiquity" mixed media sculpture, ca. 2010. Signed on large base as well as the bases of several other integrated figures. Truly one-of-a-kind, an awe-inspiring sculpture by Tennessee artist Prescott Smith that brings together countless anthropomorphic (perhaps ancestral or shaman) figures as well as zoomorphic, hybrid, and demon creatures in a towering assemblage. The sculpture is predominantly comprised of steel but also extensively embellished with a myriad of applied colorful maskettes made from modeling clay and adorned with beads, feathers, steel wool, found objects, among other materials. In addition, much of the steel structure is burnished, cut, layered, and decorated with applied and engraved motifs that conjure various indigenous traditions and symbols. Finally, this impressive ensemble seems to emerge from a steel backdrop, skillfully cut to suggest the profile of an anthropomorphized figure that mysteriously emanates from the earth. An unbelievably complex and imaginative sculpture by Prescott Smith. Size: 12" L x 24.5" W x 31.5" H (30.5 cm x 62.2 cm x 80 cm)
Prescott Smith studied sculpture under Juan Jose Calandaria as well as painting under John McCrady - both leading New Orleans artists. Smith's works have been exhibited at many galleries and museums including the Denver Art Museum; Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Provenance: private Goldstein collection, Denver, Colorado, USA. The Goldstein's have amassed their collection over the past six decades.
