Johann Berthelsen (American/New
Johann Berthelsen (American/New York 1883-1972) "Fifth Avenue Looking North from 23rd Street" oil on canvas signed lower right 25 1/8 in. x 30 1/8 in. in a giltwood frame. Note: Johann Berthelsen was a trained opera singer and a self-taught painter. Born in Copenhagen Denmark his mother in 1890 brought the family to the U.S. where they settled in Michigan. A highly successful and well-trained opera singer in 1920 Berthelsen moved to New York City where he achieved rapid success in his musical career. As an avocation he created pastels and watercolors of New York scenes. During the Depression he began to paint large-scale oil paintings to support his family. His most distinctive and popular works depicted New York snow scenes. As shown in the work offered here these snow scenes portray the flickering snowfall and city's massive architecture. The spire of the Empire State Building disappears into the wintry clouds. His works rejoice in the snow that turns the city into a wonderland. Though Berthelsen was exclusively self-taught he completely mastered his craft and technique.
