WINDCROFTE HOUSE, TUXEDO ROAD,
WINDCROFTE HOUSE, TUXEDO ROAD, ATLANTA Lots 601-907 in this auction come from the Windcrofte House of Nell & Robert Woodruff, owned from 1948 until the late 1980s.
Windcrofte, situated on 16 acres of prime north Atlanta real estate, was the home of Coca-Cola magnate Robert W. Woodruff and his wife, Nell - they purchased the home in 1948. The house was originally built in 1937 for Charles and Emily King by Charles Black; the interior designer was Harvey Smith, and Billy Monroe (Senior and Junior) were responsible for the landscaping and pools. The house boasted an estimated 10,600 square feet and images of its elegance were confirmed on pages 128-129 in 100 Most Beautiful Room in America by Helen Comstock, 1958.
The name Windcrofte combines Wind (representing the Holy Spirit) and Crofte (a small agricultural landholding with at least one house in Scotland).
Windcrofte was THE center for Atlanta entertainment, both social and business, during the Woodruff occupancy and when they both were in town. Monogrammed dinner services and sterling silver complimented fine and decorative art collections along with quality Persian carpets and crystal and porcelains from around the world.
The Woodruffs enjoyed four residences: Windcrofte, their two-story River House complex at 52nd street New York, The TE Ranch in Wyoming and of course, Ichauway Plantation in southwest Georgia. All four of these residences were highlighted in the sterling silver designed and sapphire inset domed box by silver-smith Andrew A. Taylor, New Jersey, and inscribed as a gift to the Woodruffs from Morton and Peg.
Windcrofte was inherited by Nell Hodgson Watt, the niece of Robert and Nell Woodruff and sold for $5.8 million dollars December 1988. During the 20th year of the Decorators? Show House, 30,000 spectators toured the mansion during the three-week show.
