GEORGE VAN MILLETT (1864-1953)
GEORGE VAN MILLETT (1864-1953) OIL ON CANVASGeorge Van Millett (Missouri, Kansas, 1864-1953)A Moment to Herself (1898)While known primarily as a landscape artist, George 'Van' Millet was known to paint the occasional genre scene. For many of these, the artist includes the word 'moment' in the title. This makes sense as G. V. Millet chose subjects for these genre and interior scenes that were very evocative of a moment, or a mood, which he was skilled at capturing on canvas. Here a young woman in a hoop back chair sits in a small kitchen by an open window with a mixing bowl on its ledge above a dry sink with utensils, her sewing basket on a Windsor stool in front of her and a broom and bucket behind her. All of these she'll work with later, but for now, as the title says, she has a moment to herself lost in thought, and some needlework. The painting is signed and dated lower right front. The title is A Moment to Herself.Canvas measures 21.25 x 16.25 with a framed size of 26.25 x 21.25 inches.Very good condition noting a nickel-sized area of inpainting upper right quadrant. There are no other issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.Provenance: A private Kansas City collection.

PETER MAX (B.1937), "RIGHT NOW,"
PETER MAX (B.1937), "RIGHT NOW," 1970, ACRYLIC ON CANVAS WITH SCREENPRINTED ELEMENTS, 65" H X 73" HPeter Max, (b.1937) "Right Now," 1970, Acrylic on canvas with screenprinted elements Signed and dated lower left: Peter Max; titled by repute Acrylic on canvas with screenprinted elements Dimensions: 65" H x 73" H Provenance: Private Collection: Newport Beach, CA. Peter Max was born in Germany in 1937, and he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1953. Drawing inspiration from the marvels of New York City, Max began attending the Art Students League & School of Visual Arts in 1956 under the tutelage of the noted realist artist Frank Reilly. In the early 1960s, Max began winning awards for book cover illustrations and graphic designs. "Right Now," painted in 1970, epitomizes the hippy counterculture zeitgeist that spread throughout the United States during the previous decade. In the work, we see an abstracted shape of a head, a flying angel, and other visual elements that are characteristic of Max's oeuvre during this era. This work, which has remained in a private collection since 1971, is among the largest examples of Peter Max's early oil paintings to have ever come to market.
