Thomas Sully (PA 1783-1872) General Jacksonoil on paper laid on board unsigned portrait study similar to the final painting completed in 1819 for the Association of American Artists (number 878 in THE LIFE AND WORKS OF THOMAS SULLY by Edward Biddle and Mantle Fielding Philadelphia: Wickersham Press 1921) and described as ''three-quarter length in uniform face front right hand on hilt of sword left hand on holster holding reins of a horse.'' A variation of this image was also engraved by J. B. Longacre and published in November 1820. Presented under glass in a gilt composition frame.Painting 7 11/16 x 6 3/32 in.; DOA 11 x 9 3/8 in.Another oil sketch on heavy paper of General Andrew Jackson and his horse is documented in the Frick Art Reference Library (call number Sully Thomas 121-3d). Their records note that it too descended in the Nash/Rhoades family after being gifted from Mr. William Henry Westray Darley (husband of Jane Sully daughter of the artist). Lt. Thomas Tarbell 2nd USSS DOW Civil War Tintype A cdv-sized tintype of Lt. Thomas Tarbell with thin facial hair in frock coat with dark ''rubber'' buttons and brass 2/USSS/E kepi insignia. A large cloth 3rd Corps badge is also visible. A native of Mount Tabor Vermont Thomas J. Tarbell enlisted as Sergeant in Company E. 2nd USSS in October 1861 and was captured at 2nd Bull Run paroled and returned to the regiment in November 1862. Tarbel was promoted to 1st Sergeant in December 1863 and again to 2nd Lieutenant on March 13 1864 before being wounded in the Wilderness on May 6 shot in the left thigh. Tarbell was sent to Douglas General Hospital in Washington and later furloughed back home to Danby Vermont where he died on October 9 1864 from the effects of typhoid fever and infection. Condition: Some wear to plate where it once was matted plus slight wear along edges.

Private Collection, Pennsylvania. ,500-4,000 Condition Summary: The painting is in good condition both aesthetically and structurally. The stretcher is period and quite likely original. The painting has a layer of dirt covering a thick layer of natural resin varnish that is lightly discolored. UV light reveals retouching under the varnish prominent examples of which are seen at the left side of the hair, on the nose and around the left eye. The painting also exhibits traction crackle in the dark colors that has been inpainted. areas conform with mechanical cracks in the paint layer that are visible to the naked eye. The stretcher is period and likely original. There is evidence suggesting that the painting may be lined but this cannot be confirmed without removing the painting from it''s frame.
