Walter Inglis Anderson (American, Mississippi 1903-1965) "Thumbelina", hand-painted linoleum block print on wallpaper of this rare image, sheet size 20-1/4" x 76-3/4", printed and painted ca. 1970's from the block created by Walter Anderson ca. 1945, painted by Adele Anderson Lawton. Glazed and handsomely framed. Provenance: Purchased from Shearwater Pottery, Ocean Springs, Mississippi, ca. 1977; Collection of Malcolm and Alicia Heard, New Orleans, Louisiana. Reference: Mary Anderson Pickard, Patricia Pinson and Christopher Maurer, Form and Fantasy: The Block Prints of Walter Anderson. For this linocut, Walter Anderson places the tiny heroine from the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale into a whimsical Gulf Coast landscape. He has her riding atop a water lily leaf that is pulled by a butterfly and is surrounded by crabs, marsh grass, fish and birds.
