'FUTILITY' BY MORGAN ROBERTSON,
'FUTILITY' BY MORGAN ROBERTSON, RARE FIRST EDITION, 1898'FUTILITY' BY MORGAN ROBERTSON, RARE FIRST EDITION, 1898, Octavo, 145 pages, Futility, or, The Wreck of the Titan as it was later subtitled, was printed by M.F. Mansfield in 1898, 14 years before the sinking of the Titanic. The fictional story of a ship, The Titan, that sinks when it hits an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean, similarities include carrying an insufficient number of lifeboats, hitting an iceberg during the night in April, and sinking in the North Atlantic. While there are differences, including the number of people killed (705 survived the Titanic and only 13 survived the fictional sinking), there are enough uncanny coincidences that it fascinates historians and experts to this day.

Four early 20th century books by
Four early 20th century books by Morgan Robertson, including The Wreck of the Titan, or Futility (n.p., 1912). This book originally came out in 1898 and was a fictional account of a grand luxury liner which one April night sinks in the North Atlantic ocean after striking an iceberg. It was reissued in the present edition after the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic in April 1912, when the novella's striking resemblances to the famous real-life tragedy were remarked upon. The fictional and real ships were close to the same size, both would have survived a head-on collision but not a glancing blow (as actually occurred to the Titanic), and there were not enough lifeboats for all the passengers.
The other three books are Down to the Sea, Masters of Men and Where Angels Fear to Tread; all four are the Autograph Edition published by McClure's Magazine and Metropolitan Magazine. In Autograph Editions one of the books contained a real autograph of the author. In the present group the one with Robertson's autograph (on a card pasted in on a front endpaper) is Where Angels Fear to Tread.

Illustrated Throughout With Photographs And Drawings Made Expressly For This Book." Published in the immediate wake of the famous maritime disaster, this "graphic and thrilling account of the sinking of the greatest Floating Palace ever built" sold briskly to an eager public. A century later, its tragic tale continues to captivate readers. These contemporary reports describe the luxury liner, its passengers, and the circumstances of the wreck. Gripping narratives by survivors recount episodes of heroism and cowardice along with dramatic rescues and moving incidents of self-sacrifice. In addition to chronicling the wide-ranging outpouring of grief and the establishment of many memorials, this fascinating compilation presents expert analysis of the shipwreck's causes and the findings of a Senate investigation convened to determine responsibility for the catastrophe. Historic photographs and specially commissioned drawings appear throughout the book. Marshall Everett (1863-1939) excelled at producing timely chronicles of recent misfortunes. His books include The Complete Life of William McKinley and the Story of His Assassination, The Great Chicago Theater Disaster, and The Complete Story of the San Francisco Earthquake. This leather / green cloth bound gold gilt hardcover exhibits slight edges scuffing, marbled painted top, bottom and fore edges, intact pages exhibits age tanning and slight foxing.
