MISSISSIPPIAN BELL PLAIN POTTERY
MISSISSIPPIAN BELL PLAIN POTTERY JAR W/ TL TESTNative American, Southeast or Midwest, Mississippian, ca. 900 to 1300 CE. A gorgeous coil-formed Bell Plain pottery jar boasting a tiered and rounded base, a globular body, and a broad neck that stretches to a circular rim. Enveloped in a hue of dark taupe, the exterior of this vessel is intricately incised using the Walls Engraved technique with a series of curved shapes filled with lattice designs, intended as rattle snakes, and a large trefoil with spikes along its petals. Caddoan pottery was the finest produced by the Mississippian culture, with very thin walls, intricate motifs, and well-proportioned shapes. Size: 5.25" in diameter x 5.375" H (13.3 cm x 13.7 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

ANCIENT SYRO-HITTITE POTTERY STANDING IDOL, TL TESTEDAncient Near East, The Levant, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 1100 to 500 BCE. An enticing, hand-built pottery idol, likely of Astarte - known as Ishtar in parts of Mesopotamia - the goddess associated with femininity, war, and motherhood. The figure presents with a pillar-shaped body draped in a lengthy robe that flares at the base as she holds both arms gently against her chest. Broad shoulder taper gradually upwards towards a tight choker-style necklace. Her captivating countenance shows off a beak-like nose flanked with annular eyes and framed by a bushy coiffure. Size: 1.6" W x 5.3" H (4.1 cm x 13.5 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.

MAGNA GRAECIA GNATHIAN LIDDED LEKANIS, TL TESTEDMagna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A charming terracotta vessel used to store soaps and scented perfumes, with a thin-walled body, twin handles, and a slightly raised disc base, created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to the red-figure painting technique. A lid with a round knob handle at its center neatly fits inside the rim. The lid is painted with a grapevine motif, including evenly spaced clusters of grapes, and a rosette on the knob, all skillfully executed via the red-figure technique with added fugitive white and yellow pigments. The base is painted a simple black on its exterior and handles, with the rim left unpainted. Size: 7.5" W x 3" H (19 cm x 7.6 cm)

Condition:
One handle has been reattached; otherwise unrepaired and unrestored. Pigment is in nice condition with some losses and wear on surface commensurate with age. This includes a few small chips, mainly from the underside.
