Maxwell graduated from Principia College in 1950 with a B.A. degree in art and continued his formal education at Claremont Graduate School where he studied with Millard Sheets. While there, he was honored with one-man exhibitions of his paintings at Scripps College and at the Pioneer Museum, Stockton, California — his first museum show. In 1951 Maxwell exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and was given his first solo exhibition in a commercial gallery by Felix Landau, Los Angeles. Since then, he has had numerous exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe, Canada and Australia.
