CARVED AND PAINTED 72-INCH TOTEM POLEThe one-piece coniferous wood totem attributable to Tlingit or Haida is exceptionally well carved in high relief and embellished with warm vegetal colors depicting whale, raven, bear, frog, watchman, etcetera - largely displaying a fine surface of chiseled wood beveling overall. There are no maker's marks or signatures.This lot can ship via UPS or FedEx, however, given the size and weight it will be expensive. LARGE CIGAR STORE PLAINS CHIEF TOTEM POLE CARVINGFor your consideration is this large American Cigar Store Triple Head Carved Indian Totem Pole. Historically, these carvings would be placed outside of tobacco outlets, signifying to passerby that the establishment sold tobacco products. Features the top figure wearing a bison horn headdress and pendant necklace, the central figure wearing a ferronnière headband and the bottom figure wearing a raven headdress. This totem is impressively detailed, each face having an imposing presence. A totem is a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe. Usually a natural object or an animate being, as an animal or bird, this totem appears as a tribute / memorial to leaders of a clan / tribe. The piece shows good condition overall, with some light wear. This triple head Indian Totem measures 70.5"H x 20"W x 16"D approximately.
