FRANTZ CHARLET "TRANQUILITY"
FRANTZ CHARLET "TRANQUILITY" WATERCOLOR PAINTINGFrantz Charlet (Belgian, 1862-1928). Watercolor on artist's paper painting titled "Tranquility," depicting a quiet and serene pastoral scene with a mother sits knitting in the grass by the water’s edge while her daughter watches the sailboats going by, ca. 1895-1905. This work is a placid look at provincial life in a quaint waterfront town. Signed along the lower left.
Lot Essay:
Charlet was a student of the Académie de Bruxelles and l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and is known for his portraiture, landscape, and genre work. Along with a group of ten colleagues, Charlet founded Les XX in October of 1883. Les XX argued against established traditions and invited young, emerging artists from outside Belgium to exhibit with them. Artists who shared their aesthetic ideals and exhibited with the group included luminaries such as Toulouse Lautrec, John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet, and James McNeill Whistler. Les XX also believed strongly in the unity of the avant-garde and the inherent links between the different forms of the arts.
Tranquility is a beautiful work of art that comes in its original, wide profile, ornate, gesso frame.

BARRY SAUTNER -
BARRY SAUTNER - TRANQUILITYSigned, 1998, Sand carved glass, 10h x 4d. Barry was born in Philadelphia, and later moved to the Flemington area, where he lived for nearly 30 years before relocating to Florida. His background as a glass-blower in New Jersey for nearly 10 years was fueled by a passion to explore glass as a means of artistic expression. But after an illness forced him out of the sweltering heat of the furnace room, he found he had artistic visions yet to be fully realized in glass. "Glass has always been my canvas and my voice," Saunter said. In describing his artistic passion, he said, "In my carvings, I attempt to express my innermost feelings which for me, are difficult to express verbally. Major themes in my work have included the environment, beauty, nature, mythology, and the spiritual nature of man as well as people's struggles with themselves. I've attempted to bring the past into the present and future by developing methods that challenge me to take glass carving beyond its acknowledged limits. In addition, I create each piece with a great degree of fine detail, hoping to involve and captivate the viewer with the piece and the message contained therein. I sincerely hope that my art will represent to the viewer something more than virtuoso carving.” Barry’s work has been displayed at a variety of museums and galleries, and his work is part of the permanent collections of the; Bergstrom-mahler Museum, the Birks museum, the Museum of American Glass and the Newark Museum, as well as many private collections.
