SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR RIFLE. Attributed to ''Whitney'' as a .45-70 buffalo rifle of the 1880s. Heavy octagonal barrel 28'' with hooded front and large rear peep sight. Walnut stock has a nicely checkered grip and oil finish. Lock plate has the US Springfield and eagle motif in front of hammer. Inspector SWP1888 left side of stock. Ramrod is wood with a brass end. S/n 267042. Inscription on lock plate barely visible. Rifeling is visible though worn. Bluing on barrel is 70%.

Condition: Barrel and action retains 90% of the original blue finish. Breechblock with traces of case color mostly turning brown. Walnut stock has had a coat of Tru-oil applied. Still retains a good cartouche; the stock has a cut out where the receiver sight was added. Bore is excellent.

Cartouche stamps are missing from stock. Heavy varnish.

V P and Eagle head left side of barrel very clear. Eagle and US Springfield and 1883 slightly worn. Leather sheath for bayonet stamped US. brass 'US'' on belt clip. Leather is dry but not brittle. A nice looking combination.
