Our auction items are mostly vintage, mostly from estates, and are not in perfect condition. The items are sold "as is", and we are acting as agents, not as principals. To assist prospective bidders in this endeavor, we offer in person open-house preview days prior to the auction, and also provide written condition reports in response to emailed requests submitted to condition@woodburyauction.com at least two days prior to the auction. The printed catalog lot information is a best efforts presentation of our opinion, rendered on a time-sensitive schedule, and is provided for guidance only, without legal obligation, and does not constitute a "statement of fact". - AMAZING CABINETS OF CURIOSITIES CANE-Ca
AMAZING CABINETS OF CURIOSITIES CANE-Ca 1870 -This cane features a primate’s skull as a handle and a shaft made of the vertebrae of a reptile’s spine with longer and joining bone segments between the skull and the shaft and the horn ferrule. This highly collectable natural history and barely encountered cane is contemporary to Charles Darwin and his assumptions of natural selection. Notable an articulated and spring operated lower jaw with perfect dentition. It has been said that this kind of “Odd Curiosities” have played roles as symbols of power and status and often were expressions of personal style or even magical protectors, supposedly possessing the power to ward off evil spirits, sickness and danger. In any case, its imagery has a magic that speaks to everyone. In addition to all the ingredients for success it also has the attraction of having been hidden for over 80 years in a treasure chest filled with other interesting canes and thus proudly survived the depredations time, children and clumsy housemaids. -H. 4 ¼” x 4 ¼”, O.L. 36 ½” -$2,000-$3,000
