SILVER CANN BY ZACHARIAH BRIGDEN. (1734-1787)Brigden was born in Charlestown, MA and worked in Boston, MA. Marked on bottom. Acanthus leaf scroll handle. Approx. 6" high, 5 1/2" wide, 3 3/4" diameter. 13.27 ozt. This tankard is marked S H M on the handle. An old note states that is was owned by Samuel Henshaw (1744-1809) and Martha Hunt Henshaw (1755-1842) it was likely made for their wedding in 1782. Martha ran a school for girls out of her family home called Sessions House, now part of Smith College. Samuel Henshaw was a prominent citizen of Milton, Boston, and Northampton, Massachusetts. He was a preacher, lawyer, a judge of the Northampton Probate Court, and trustee of Williams College. Samuel Henshaw is known to have corresponded with George Washington, John Adams, and Alexander Hamilton
