A TOURNAI MEDIEVAL STYLE ARMORIAL GAME PARK SILK AND WO...A TOURNAI MEDIEVAL STYLE ARMORIAL GAME PARK SILK AND WOOL TAPESTRY, 19TH/20TH CENTURY, beautifully woven in polychrome colors on a tobacco ground and centering a seated noble lady wearing jewels with fine robes while an exotic plumed bird rests on her hand, flanked by a standing armorial profile griffon holding aloft a cluster column topped by an armorial lion clutching a shield and pole with billowing flag, opposite a standing armorial profile lion holding matching column surmounted by a similar seated lion with shield and flag, each before a white fence amidst a verdant park of large leafed blossoming foliage interspersed with foraging deer, parrots, exotic birds, a jaguar, hare, monkey, and hunting hounds, within a conforming cream stripe and aubergine border, verso stitched to a white linen backing and mounted on a wood frame with stretcher. Height: 5' 4 1/2" Width: 8' 5" Provenance: Property from the Jesse H. Jones and Houston Endowment Collection, all proceeds to benefit the Houston Food Bank.
Condition:
Faded in some areas more than others, a little dry, some small repairs scattered throughout, dusty, some small soiled areas near borders, and modern professional linen lined with stretcher frame. Note from John Herkimer to John Porteous explaining that he was unable to immediately meet a debt but after he sells some hay he will pay both his and his mother's debts. John Herkimer (1773-1848) was a member of the influential Herkimer family of Tryon/Montgomery County son of George and nephew of General Nicholas Herkimer. Born too late for Indian War or Revolutionary War service John did serve as a Major in the State militia during the War of 1812. He served in the state assembly (1800 1804 1806) before being elected to the U.S. Congress (1817-1819; 1823-1825). DS 6pp 8 x 10 in. tied with red ribbon upper left Tryon County New York filed 21 May 1775 (March term in the fifteenth year of the Reign of King George the Third.). Legal document relating to a debt signed by W. Butler. DS 2pp 7.75 x 12.75 in. Tryon Co. NY 1783. Legal document relating to a debt; Matthew Visscher Attny. DS 1p plus docketing on verso 9 x 14.75 in. Tryon Co. NY June term 1774. Legal document relating to a debt signed Gansevoort - another influential name in the region. It is not clear whether this is Peter Gansevoort but it was likely a relative. DS 2pp 7.75 x 12.75 in. Johnstown Tryon County NY 15 Dec. 1774 (Fifteenth year of the reign of King George the Third). Legal document regarding a debt signed by Heindrick Frey Judge. Condition: Folds and toning as expected. All mounted on larger sheets with cut-outs so both sides visible.
