- BEATRICE ELIZABETH HINDLEY (1882-1973)
BEATRICE ELIZABETH HINDLEY (1882-1973) BRITISHA stunning collection of twenty hand-wrought miniature metal flowers, each formed & soldered by hand, hand- painted and set within a naturalistically modelled ground, then 'potted' in their original hand-made & hand-painted ceramic pots. The plants, some of which - but not necessarily illustrated in order are: Tulips, Tulip Tree, Narcissus, Freesia, Anemone, Saxifrage, Primula, Hyacinth, Bulbs, Gentian, Auricula, Winter Aconite, etc. All plants are mounted within their original dedicated three tiered & glass encased stage. The tallest miniature 'Tulip Tree' measures a mere 5" high. In addition to the miniatures themselves, an original 1927 Leicester Galleries catalogue referencing an exhibition of Ms. Hindley's work titled 'MINIATURE PLANTS by BEATRICE HINDLEY' is included in the purchase, as well as other related material, photos, etc. All miniatures remain in very good overall condition, the 'Tulip Tree' with minor losses, but have been retained, a few pots with minor cracks, the stage exhibiting minor surface wear, portions of loss to molding. Dimensions of stage, 11.5" high x 16" wide x 12" deep. Note: Ms. Hindley is quoted here, taken in part from a magazine article as saying..."Each plant is made entirely by hand. No two are alike either in their bowls or in their detail. I design and paint a suitable bowl to every plant". "My plants are extremely strong, though they look so fragile. They are made of metal, and each joint is separately soldered. They are based upon hours of study in gardens and at Kew (Gardens)". Provenance: Princess Patricia Ramsay to her close personal friend, Enid Strathearn Hendrie Owen, to an Owen Family Member (current owner).

- Salesman's Book of Fruit and Flower
Salesman's Book of Fruit and Flower Color Plates Some refer to these as Nurserymen's books but this one folds into thirds and slips into a 7.25 x 10 in. leather case - clearly for travel. The 5.25 x 8.5 in. plates are glued back to back with a ribbon between them in groups of 3. The leather front has gilt Fruit & Ornamental Foliage. The marbled paper cardboard dividers are joined by fabric. The book contains 126 wonderful color plates of fruit flowers and trees most printed by J.W. Thompson & Co. (80+ plates). A few are by C.M. Search & Co. (17 and at least 2 more); a couple by Mensing & Stecher (2); some are unknown (23) because the printer information was trimmed off or in one case the page has torn across the bottom but probably represent one of these three companies all based in Rochester NY the center of fruit/flower color plate printing. Based on the working times of these companies the book probably dates between 1876 (when Thompson started) and 1886 (when Mensing died and the company became Stecher Litho. Co.).As demand changed or species were replaced often the salesman would paste a new image over the old one. This salesman did just that (and fortunately only glued across the top of the plate leaving the underlying plate nearly intact). Many of the plates have prices penciled at top (many were 25 or 50 cents or 3 for $1). Species that were apparently no longer available - many with others pasted on top - have "W" on them (for withdrawn?). The illustrated species [including the ones covered by newer selections]:Apples - Duchess of Oldenburgh Haas [covers Alexander (Emperor)] Dominie or Wells of Ohio [covers Huzzar] Red Bietigheiner [covers Nickajack and Emperor Russian] Salome [covers Stark and Czar of Russia] Walbridge [covers Late Russian] Red Astrachan Yellow Transparent [covers Rawle's Janet] Fameuse or Snow [covers Ben Davis] Grimes Golden [covers Laver] Baldwin [covers Mann] Walker's Beauty [covers Wealthy] Sylvan Sweet Whitney's Seedling Siberian Crab Dartmouth Crab Hyslop Crab [covers Van Wyck Sweet Crab] Martha Crab [covers Large Red Siberian] TetofskyPeaches - Hopkinsville Seedling Arkansas Traveler Missouri Mammoth Sallie Worrell Steadley [covers Governor Garland] Salway [covers Mammoth White Clingstone]Cherries - Large Montmorency Empress Eugenie Moore's Early May Early Richmond [covers Lieb] Toronto Louis PhilippePears - Bartlett Kieffer's Hybrid Flemish Beauty Clapp's Favorite [covers Frederick Clapp] Duchess D'Angouleme [covers Souvenir du Congress] Claywood's BeautyPlums - Weaver Mooney Louisa Blackman [covers German Prune] Lombard [covers Orange Quince]Quince - ChampionStrawberries - Sharpless Seedling Crescent Seedling James Vick New Strawberry-Big BobGooseberry - Smith's Improved Downing's SeedlingOther Berries - Gregg Raspberry Hansell (red raspberry) Snyder Blackberry The Marlboro (red raspberry) Fay's Prolific Currant White Grape CurrantGrapes - Niagara [covers Brighton] Lady Washington Moore's Early Pocklington Moore's Diamond [covers Vergennes] Empire State [covers Prontiss][Berry with name removed covering Rhubarb labeled as "Wine or Pie Plant"]Russian Apricot Elruge NectarineEverbearing Mulberry Russian Mulberry Lucretia DowberryFlowers:Clematis Jackmanii Perpetual Clematis-Henryii Perpetual Clematis-Gem Magnolia Acuminata Tartarian or Upright Honeysuckle Passion Flower [covers Rhododendron] Spirea Aurea Spirea Reevesii Althea-Variegated Leaved Hydranea Paniouls Grandiflora Variegated-leaved Weigela Calycanthus or Sweet Scented ShrubRoses - Greville or Seven Sisters Queen of the Prairies General Jacquemynot La France American Beauty [covers Perpetual White Moss] The "Bride" [covers Crested Moss]Trees etc.Kilmarnock Weeping Willow Weeping Mountain Ash Cut Leaved Weeping Birch American Sweet Chestnut Tulip Tree (2) [first covers Oak-Leaved Mountain Ash second covers White Leaved Weeping Linden Balsam Fir Norway Spruce White Pine Irish English or Swedish Juniper Hemlock Spruce Red CedarIn the mid-19th century a "horticulture craze" took hold in America particularly in the Upper Midwest. Although a boon for nurserymen and seed distributors it also became a target for conmen with complaints ranging from non-delivery of ordered products to inferior or misrepresented plants to inappropriate stock for a particular region. To attempt to gain some respectability back many nursery owners recruited and trained salesmen to represent their stock throughout the nation. This coincided with another craze - color plate illustration. D.M. Dewey in Rochester NY is credited with being the first to bring the two together and begin producing color plates of fruits flowers and other nursery stock that salesmen and store owners could show to potential customers. Dewey even printed a "training manual" for salesmen (1875) guiding them in what to show customers and how to entice them to purchase more than they originally intended (see Kabelac). For unclear reasons Rochester became the "hub" of printing these wonderful color plates as more printers and booksellers took up the business and the area boasted over half a dozen companies printing primarily if not exclusively these fruit and flower plates by the 1880s and 1890s.The techniques of printing these varied from the standard hand-coloring of lithographic plates to a combination stencil and hand-detailing. Eventually multicolor lithography (chromolithography) was introduced. A number of examples of this art form were included in the Amon Carter Museum exhibit "Stamped with a National Character" (and William Reese's accompanying book by the same title). Some printers offered large and small plates the former for store counter displays the latter for salesmen and even personal use. Other firms only offered one size. J.W. Thompson appears to have been one of the latter offering the small plates for sales books (Kabelac). The plates weren't cheap. Prices could run 35 cents or more each for large plates; ten to 15 cents each for small plates was not uncommon. Kabelac (1982) found ads for "cheap" books of 40 plates for $3.50; "regular" books of 70 plates sold for twice that - well over $100 today (according to some calculations) the price of a fancy "coffee table book."With the resurgence of interest in horticulture today these plates have historical appeal - we see the tenacity of favorite varieties as well as those which have fallen out of favor or even gone extinct. And the brilliance of the color and simplicity of design of these plates insures their esthetic appeal today and into the future.References:D. M. Condition: The outer leather case has gotten wet and at some point probably mildewed. The tab for closure missing. The book of plates apparently was damp but does not show the damage of the case. The plates are variable some with minor surface soil or foxing one with a section of the lower edge missing. Overall however they are bright and attractive.
