CARVED POWDER HORN. Engraved
CARVED POWDER HORN. Engraved ''Asahel Taet His Horn 1776 Ticonderoga 18 September '' along with birds and deer. 13 1/2''l. Ex McGuire estate of Tallmadge Ohio. According to tradition this horn descended in the Doolittle family which had settled in Ohio by the middle of the 19th century. Missing cap and plug 2'' by 4'' chunk has been broken and glued.

1799 AMERICAN POWDER HORN W/ WOOD & STEEL CAPNorth America, United States, ca. 1799 CE. A hand carved powder horn made from cow horn, with a wooden plug and a steel pin tip. The body is flat and narrow, tapering to the ridges mouth. A rectangular piece of horn is riveted to the wide bottom with iron nails. The lower face is engraved with a scrolling trefoil or cartouche motif and the year "1799." Powder horns were used for holding gunpowder but could also be carved intricately as a type of folk art. This is a nice example with an unusual, compressed shape. Size: 8" L x 3" W (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm)

Engraved Powder Horn by John Tansel
Engraved Powder Horn by John Tansel 17.25" length. Wood base with brass tacks around base and bottom edge of the horn.? Saw-tooth fish mouth carved edge continues into the smooth throat;?with raised rings around the spout.? Engraved E. Pluribus Unum in a banner and eagle with red polychrome in the stripes of shield also used to highlight different areas on the horn. Engravings of dogs deer lion cannon; also in a banner John Tansel and dated April 6th 1819."John Tansel" is unknown. Several men so-named are recorded in the early 19th century Federal Census Records specifically the 1830 and 1840 enumeration in Ancestry.com. Another "John Tansel" is listed with War of 1812 service as a private in both the 4th and 5th Regiment Virginia Militia. These are likely the same man with two different enlistments. Condition: This is an outstanding horn with a deep brownish untouched patina.? Horn is excellent.

Early American Tansel Powder Horn
Early American Tansel Powder Horn 16'' length. Engraved with the Eagle clutching arrows and sheaths of wheat E. Pluribus Unum in a banner above the eagle a hunter (i.e. the ''Buckskinner'') hunting deer. Nice serpent's mouth with the teeth carved protruding on to the spout. This particular horn has been nicknamed the ''Buckskinner's powder horn.'' Interesting it has a screw top wood base with iron loop and another iron loop near the spout. One large brass tack has been in the base of the horn for a long time it has a beautiful dark brown halo around it. Condition: Horn is in excellent condition with a nice untouched yellow patina.
