A CHINESE JIZHOU TORTOISESHELL
A CHINESE JIZHOU TORTOISESHELL GLAZED BOWL Song dynasty (1127-1279 CE), the bowl has flared sides and is covered inside and outside with a dark black brown glaze splashed in buff and warm orange tones falling just above the foot. The glaze was an innovation at the Jizhou kilns in Jiangxi province and became known as the 'tortoiseshell' glaze because of its similarity to the shell of the hawksbill sea turtle, bowl has a Chinese brown wax export seal to the underside.
