A Carved Ivory/Bone Turtle Family
A Carved Ivory/Bone Turtle Family Grouping The central figure is clad in a mosaic of ivory/bone over a solid core probably wood. Lines at the joints can be seen on the underside of the large turtle. It carries a smaller turtle and a host of tiny turtles on its back and surrounding on the wood platform. The platform is decorated with inset designs of silver wire oval on bracket feet. Overall apprx. 13"L x 9"W.

Provenance: Property from the estate of Patricia Moffat Pope, San Francisco, CA, Mrs. Pope was born May 12,1927, to parents William H. Moffat and May Martin Moffat in Reno, Nev. She grew up, a cattleman's daughter, loving the ranches and riding horses. She married George A. Pope Jr. in 1959 and together they built a Thoroughbred horse racing empire that included 27 stakes winners in the United States and in Europe. A PAIR OF VIETNAMESE PAINTED AND
A PAIR OF VIETNAMESE PAINTED AND LACQUERED TEMPLE CRANES ON TURTLES Late 19th or early 20th century, carved wood with polychrome pigments and gilt lacquer, each crane painted white and standing atop a gilt red turtle base, the cranes have a graceful arched neck and elegant flowing wings that sweep behind, gilt accents to the wings and feathers on the necks give these temple sculptures an elegant and ethereal aura. These sculptures would have originally graced a Buddhist temple in Vietnam, the crane on the back of the tortoise symbolizes longevity and happiness. The tortoise is believed to live ten thousand years, and the crane one thousand years.
