WWII US MILITARY NAVY SERVICE COLLECTIONPersonal items from sailor "John D. Fink", Electrician's Mate Second Class, USN. Lot includes various patches, photo, dog tag, submarine warfare insignia, blanket & 1946 Honorable Discharge certificate from the United States Navy. The patches bear the names of one ship and two submarines. U.S.S. Crestview, U.S.S Crevalle and U.S.S. Tigrone. On 11 August, the first reports of Japan's surrender were received, but, for two more days, Tigrone continued her patrols, approaching within 50 miles (80 km) of the shore of Sagami Wan as she pursued lifeguard duties. On 13 August, with Navy pilots helping to spot targets, she bombarded Mikomoto Island, scoring 11 hits on a radio station and lighthouse tower. U.S. NAVY COATEE WORN BY LT. JOHN MERCER BROOKE United StatesC. 1840s-50sDark blue superfine broadcloth body, gold metallic lace around the collar and cuffs, Scovill back marked navy buttons, white silk lining with padding in the breast, marked "Lt JM Brooke" in iron gall ink on a tab on the neck, and silk lining in the sleeves. Note: John Mercer Brooke (1826-1906) was born in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1847 becoming a lieutenant. He worked on many projects for the U.S. Navy including finding the shape of the sea bottom and mapping as well as having a part in the transatlantic cable. In 1861, he resigned his commission and joined the Virginia navy and served for the Confederacy. He worked on converting the USS Merrimac to the CSS Virginia, and invented the Brooke rifle. He served until the surrender of Confederate forces and asked President Andrew Johnson for a pardon. After the war he became a professor at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia and died there in 1906.

[Naval History] manuscript and illustrated document by John Thomas Newton Commander of the Home Squadron U.S. Navy 1852-1855 eleven pages 7 1/8 in. x 5 in. illustrating in great detail the flag signals used by the ships Columbia Princeton Cyane Albany Decatur and Fulton mounted on paper 15 in. x 11 in. extracted from a 19th c. scrap book. Note: The Home Squadron part of the U.S. Navy was organized in 1838. Its ships were assigned to protect coastal commerce aid ships in distress suppress piracy and the slave trade and make coastal surveys. It was discontinued after the outbreak of the Civil War when the Union blockade forced a reassignment of ships to close off Southern ports. John Thomas Newton (1793-1857) was appointed in 1809 as a midshipman. He served on the Hornet and commanded the steamers Fulton and Missouri and the navy yard in Pensacola FL. He became flag officer and commodore of the Home Squadron from 1852-1855 and commanded the navy yard in Portsmouth NH from 1855-1857.
