The first Paris edition was originally printed by Shakespeare and Company that same year. This edition was published shortly after that edition and is actually the one that led to the court case over obscenity in the United States. Numbered 1493 of only 2000 printed. Book is in the original blue paper covers. A very rare edition of a truly great novel.

CIVIL WAR ARCHIVE, IDENTIFIED SWORD, BELT, PHOTO(lot of 6) U.S. Civil War naval officer archive, Lieutenant Francis Lafayette Harris U.S. Navy (Boston, 1824-1913) including: (1) U.S. Model 1852 Navy sword, the bright foliate blade, 28.75"l, etched on each side, one side with "Leut F.L. Harris, U.S.N.," and an eagle over a cannon, the opposite side with an anchor and marked at the ricasso, "Ames Sword Co., Chicopee, Mass.," the pierced guard with lettering "USN," the handle with gilt wire wrapped over sharkskin, the pommel with thirteen stars surrounding an eagle, present is the worn gilt sword knot, complete with the worn black leather scabbard having "rope" hooks, the upper brass mount marked "Lieut F.L. Harris, U.S. Navy," the center brass mount with a star, and federal shield, the lower mount with an anchor over foliate etching ending at the dolphin wrapped drag, overall scabbard and sword 35.75"l; (1) U.S. Navy sword belt, dark blue with three horizontal stripes at center attached to leather, the buckle in cast brass centering an eagle holding an anchor, sword hangers with swivel snaps, one detached but present; (1) book: "Schools and Schoolboys of Old Boston," Arthur Brayley, Boston, 1894, a biography of Harris together with photo in USN uniform appears at page 167, the interior board with Harris's book plate (book in poor condition); (1) oil painting of Harris, c.1901, based on the book photo with notations on the verso as to eye color, hair color, etc., sight: 17"h, 14"w, overall: 28"h, 24"w; (1) a second copy of the Brayley book with black cover and gilt lettering reading "Lieut Frank L. Harris, Only Survivor of the Hayes Arctic Expedition," Harris signature at the interior page, pages 167, 168 are not present; (1) silver plate shield-form name plate, gilt lettered F.L. Harris, screw back with conforming wood back, 3"h, 6"w *Note: Harris served in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1862 and was discharged in 1865, Prior to the Civil War he had attended the U.S. Naval School in New York City and was assigned to the USS St. Louis, USS Cumberland, USS Cyane. Harris left the Navy and joined John and Louis Dent (brother in laws of Ulysses S. Grant) in a trading venture with Indians. He participated in the Hayes Expedition (1860-61), an attempt to reach the North Pole. Harris's service during the Civil War included acting ensign on the U.S.S. Dan Smith where he led a small party trying to recapture Union vessels (see page 217, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies, Series 1, Vol. 5). Harris burned the damaged vessels and rescued several of the Union crew members.*

Covered with the original gilt-stamped green cloth, each volume with a steel-engraved frontispiece, and with several illustrations throughout. Octavo size (covers measure 9.5 x 6.5 inches). This acclaimed autobiography was published immediately following Ulysses S. Grant's death in 1885 by Grant's friend Mark Twain, who founded Charles L. Webster & Company.

Rubbing and general wear, some foxing throughout. No tears or losses apparent.

An unnumbered intaglio inspired by the literary character from James Joyce's Ulysses (1922). Pencil-signed and inscribed "to Bill" in the bottom margin. Presented behind glass in a frame that measures 15 1/4" x 11 3/4".
Provenance : From the Bill & Ellen Morgan collection. Bill Morgan is a professor emeritus of English at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. It was there that he befriended Nicolas Africano, and he quickly became a patron and collector of the Africano's work as well; for a time Morgan rented Africano a room, occasionally accepting artwork in lieu of payment. This far-reaching collection from an early adopter gives a unique opportunity to access rare early works and get an expansive view of the artist during several pivotal moments in his journey.

Presented behind glass in a metal frame that measures 11 1/4" x 10 1/4". The text reads "Ron of Japan went to the ocean. We beleive [sic] he will come home. Ulysses of Japan, quiet lover, through the desert to Oregon and the sea."
Though "Ron of Japan" is a reference to a Chicago restaurant and ceramics gift shop, according to Bill Morgan the meaning of this Africano work is personal: "A friend named Ron took off on a long road trip to the Northwest to find himself, and this piece was done as an affectionate “Happy Trails” tribute in recognition of his travels as a means of self-discovery."

ULYSSES GRANT / ROBERT E. LEE D6698 - LARGE - ROYAL DOU...Royal Doulton Character Jug, Ulysses Grant/Robert Lee D6698 (black, grey, brown and red coloration). Designed by Michael Abberley. Series: The Antagonists' Collection (Two-Faced jug), issued 1983 in a limited edition of 9,500. Size: 7"H (Large)Ulysses Samuel Grant (1822 - 1885), a native of Ohio, was made Lieutenant-General by President Lincoln and put in command of the Union Army in the American Civil War. His successes led to his election as president in 1868. Robert E. Lee (1807 - 1870) was the general in command of the Confederate Army. He was ruthlessly pursued by General Grant, who forced him to retreat from his defense of Richmond, Virginia, in 1865. Lee's troops were surrounded at the great battle of Appomattox, where he and the Confederate Army surrendered. This jug was issued in 1983 in a limited edition of 9.500 pieces.
