African American Union Recruits ''Joining Up '' Outdoor Albumen Photograph Unknown photographer 9.50 x 7.0 in. albumen on 13.50 x 10.75 in. mount featuring a group of 14 or 15 civilians carrying muskets with two officers standing out front. The small party is flanked by a young flag bearer and three black musicians two fifers and a drummer. The unknown street scene shows a number of other civilians white and black milling about the periphery. To the right presumably a group of "contrabands" pause with wooden wheelbarrows stacked with blankets. The location of the partially painted ramshackle buildings is unknown. One clapboard structure bears neatly painted signage as an Eating House. This is likely a post like Vicksburg or somewhere in the deep South where uniformed blacks would be commonplace. An intriguing wartime view lacking only context. Condition: Undamaged albumen with scattered rubs and surface spots G+. with good clarity and sepia tones. Mount is spotted showing heavy foxing as well as damaged corners.
