NATIVE AMERICAN MIRROR BOARD CABINET CARDUnion Pacific Railroad cabinet card depicting a seated Native American man wearing wide arm bands over a shirt and button down vest with stud pattern holding what appears to be a mirror board, flanked on one side by a similarly dressed standing Native American Indian and on the other by a young man. Back of card marked U. P. R. R. Photograph Car, J. B. Silvis, Photographer. John B. Silvis spend the early part of his life trying to strike it rich mining and running various businesses. After hisfirst wife divorced him he began studying photography. His ingenuity finally paid off and he partnered with the Union Pacific Railroad to become what appears to be the first photographer to have a Photograph Car. His mobile studio was housed in a caboose and contained living quarters, a darkroom, and a portrait studio with a skylight. Silvis memorialized the quickly changing landscape of the Western Frontier, the Saloon and Mining towns, Native Americans, and the settlers and pioneers tryingto tame the land. Approx. 4-1/4" x 6-1/2". Overall discoloration, one bend to the right side with a small loss of image. See images for more details on condition. This item can be shipped in-house.
