AFTER P. ROTARI 'PORTRAIT OF A GIRL READING' 19 C. After Pietro Antonio Rotari (Italian, 1707-1762) "Giovane Donna," European School, "Portrait of a girl reading" oil on canvas, circa 1800, depicting a young girl in a rose silk dress reading a letter at a desk, her head resting against her hand, indistinctly signed lower right and attributed by an earlier owner to Viennese painter K. Wagner (Austrian, XIX), with documentation on back, now housed in an 18th century style giltwood frame. Image: 22.5" H x 25.75" W Frame: 31" H x 34.5" W
Note: The painting is a copy after a work attributed to Pietro Rotari, a photograph (see photo 11) of which survives in the Fototeca Zeri (Numero scheda 66287) at the University of Bologna, though the original work appears to be lost. The work also bears comparison to Rotari's well-known "Young Woman Writing A Letter" at the Norton Simon Museum (Acc. M.1979.18.P). While the documentation to the back attributes the work to K. Wagner, a little-known Viennese artist, Wagner's work is largely restricted to landscapes, and there appear to be no similar works by the artist. Other possible Wagners of the 19th century include Fritz Wagner, whose works are largely genre scenes. The work is more likely to have been executed by an Italian artist who would have had access to the original work.
"WAGNER IS NOT ONLY THE GREATEST GENIUS, HE IS ALSO THE GREATEST HEART" (WAGNER, RICHARD.) WAGNER, COSIMA. Autograph Letter Signed, to Elisabeth [lacking salutation], giving news of events surrounding her recent wedding to Wagner. 4 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; horizontal folds. "[Villa] Tribschen bei Luzern," 2 September 1870and settled in Italy], and that happily his mother was not with him, for the wors[t] of his pain in Munich had been the presence of that agitated being. Now I am sure Isa [daughter, Isolde?] does not want to have her mother either, and as Hans is more delicate, he won't [offend?] her and get her! . . . Here['s] a little photograph of three of my children; the oldest is nicer as on the picture; the third has been ill a fortnight which made me very anxious, now it is almost passed. I send also a little image of the house where we live, and where I am very sad not to have seen you. You see it is very rural indeed, but I like this spot, it is the only one on earth where I found peace and love. My health has got much better, but I can endure no noise and no fatigue still; but if I continue to live as I have done for a long time I am sure I will get all my strength again. I was very surprised to receive so many proofs of sympathy at the occasion of my wedding day; as I have been completely silent towards everybody, except my sister and you, I thought every body had either forgotten me or did not care for me; I was extremely touched to receive property protestations of friendship and devotedness. The family of Wagner has also behaved with much kindness; and now I only pray God to give me the form to accomplish the great mission he has confided to me. Wagner is not only the greatest genius, he is also the greatest heart you may think, and his love to me is something so inexpressible that I always believe the dream, knowing too well I don't deserve such a treasure. . . . Daniella [daughter, Daniela?] wrote to her aunt and to her grandmother some time ago, but had no answer. I don't know if they wish not to hear any thing of the children . . . . I know I would never have been for my children what I am, had I not [met?] the wonderful being who has delivered me from life and death. Wagner pays his compliments to Carl and his best regards to you. I embrace you my beloved Elisabeth . . ."

Collection Of Griswold / Wagner Cast Iron Ashtrays: For your consideration is this collection of Griswold and Wagner Ware cast iron skillet ashtrays. Starting with the Wagner Ware ashtrays, not much could be found regarding age. Both are marked "Wagner Ware / 1050". One of the ashtrays adds "Made in USA", along with an "R' after 1050; it is believed to be the newer of the two, made circa 1955. The other is believed to be circa 1940. The Griswolds present an interesting case. There are four round trays and one square. All marked with the Griswold cross logo, and all have a matchbook holder, except one. The square ashtray features a matchbook holder and has the small Griswold logo; it is from the 1950's, and is marked "Square Ash Tray / 770". Three of the round ashtrays also feature matchbook holders and block logos. They are further marked "Quality Ware / 00 Erie PA. / 570". These ashtrays were made circa 1936. The fourth round Griswold does not have a matchbook holder, but does feature the block Griswold logo. It is further marked "Quality Ware". Since Griswold made all of their ashtrays with matchbook holders, this piece is either a forgery or a transitional piece made after Griswold was acquired by Wagner. Either way, the casting is not as nice as the other Griswolds. All pieces show good overall condition for their age; they all measure about 4" x 7", excluding the cigarette rests.
