American School, 19th century view of the chew house the battleground at germantown, circa 1850 Signed 'C. Smith', pencil on Bristol board, unframed. H: 10 1/4 in. W: 14 1/8 in. (sight) PROVENANCE: NOTE: The British Fortieth Foot under the command of Colonel Thomas Musgrave (1737-1812) fought against Washington's Army on October 4, 1777 at the Chew House during the Battle of Germantown. The British victory in this battle ensured that Philadelphia, the capital of the revolutionary government of the Thirteen Colonies, would remain in British hands throughout the winter of 1777-1778. The artist C. Smith is most likely C. H. Smith, listed in Mantle Fielding as 'In 1855-60 this capital engraver of portraits and book illustrations working in Philadelphia and in N.Y.' ,200 Minor yellowing to paper. Light fading. Very good condition. No tears. Top two corners slightly bent. Minor smudges around border of paper.

LETTER TO ANTHONY WAYNE, YORKTOWN CAMPAIGN, 1781 James Milligan (Lieutenant in the 4th Pa. Regiment) autograph letter, signed, dated at camp, Bottom's Bridge (on the Chickahominy River, in New Kent Co., east of Richmond), August 12, 1781, to Gen. Anthony Wayne and docketed in his handwriting; 1 p., folio, 13 3/8 x 8 1/4 in.; offering Wayne his resignation. The Pennsylvania troops had suffered considerably over the previous few weeks for lack of supplies and in skirmishes with the British, resulting in the condensing three battalions into two, with extraneous officers sent home to recruit. In fact, Milligan remained in service until mid 1783.

JOSEPH REED, ALS, DURING THE PA LINE MUTINY, 1781 Joseph Reed (1741-1785, Statesman, Aide de Camp of Washington) autograph letter, signed, as President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, dated at Philadelphia, January 25, 1781, to Brig. Gen. Anthony Wayne at Trenton; 2 1/2 pp., folio, 11 3/4 x 7 1/8 in. Reed tells Wayne, "We have just received a fresh Demand from Mr. Deane for Shirts & Shoes," expressing exasperation because the articles had already been sent in an effort to appease the desperate soldiers in winter camp at Jockey Hollow. He asks Wayne and other officers to do all they can to distribute supplies. A postscript alludes to the reorganization of the PA Line, including relocation of various regiments.

A Pennsylvania land grant on vellum
A Pennsylvania land grant on vellum dated 5-20-1796, granting a property named "Belvadere" to William Bingham, and signed by Pennsylvania governor and Founding Father Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800). Mifflin was a Philadelphia merchant who was expelled by the Quakers for joining the Continental Army during the American Revolution, in which he served first as one of George Washington's aide-de-camps and then as Quartermaster General. After the Revolution he was the last President of Pennsylvania, succeeding Benjamin Franklin, a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, in the course of which he was a Signer of the Constitution, and then the first Governor of Pennsylvania. This document was also signed by the first Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth, James Trimble (1755-1837), and by one Nathaniel Irwin.

Field Hospital of 81st Penn. Vols. Near Falmouth VA Original Pencil Drawing Plus Shred of Battle Flag Original pencil drawing by Surgeon John Houston Jr. 81st Pennsylvania titled in the lower margin Hospital of 81st Reg't P.V. in Camp near Falmouth Va. / Winter of '62 & '63 and framed with a blue shred of the 81st's first battle flag. 7.25 x 8.5 in. housed in period frame with typewritten identification/provenance on backing indicating that this was from the son of John Houston Jr. M.D. John J.L. Houston of Philadelphia PA dated July 29 1932. John Houston Jr. enlisted in August 1862 as an Assistant Surgeon and was commissioned into Field & Staff of the Pennsylvania 81st Infantry. He was promoted to Surgeon in January 1863 and was mustered out in September 1865. The 81st Pennsylvania participated in several major battles throughout the war including Yorktown Antietam Fredericksburg Chancellorsville Gettysburg Wilderness Spotsylvania Cold Harbor Petersburg and Appomattox among many others losing 18 officers and 190 enlisted men that were killed or mortally wounded and 2 officers and 96 enlisted men that died of disease. Condition: One light fold line and toning at left and right edges.

A Pennsylvania land grant on parchment dated 7-16-1806, granting a property in Venango County named "Eyrefield" to Alexander Baring & others, and signed as Pennsylvania governor by Founding Father and Signer of the Declaration of Independence Thomas McKean (1734-1817). McKean was the delegate to the Second Continental Congress whose note brought his fellow Delaware delegate Caesar Rodney riding back to the Congress, to break the deadlock and swing Delaware's vote for American independence. This document was also signed by the first Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth, James Trimble (1755-1837), and by Timothy Matlack (1736-1829), another of the Founding Fathers who wrote out the formal copy of the Declaration of Independence.

Pattison Virginia Civil War sketch (James William Pattison, Illinois/Asheville, North Carolina, 1844-1915), encampment with tents, soldiers and barrel "flue", inscribed "Winter Quarters (1864-5) of the 57th Mass. Vol. Inft. In a pine grove (spared from cutting because of its value as cover to our positions, although when the weather was cold we went long distances to obtain fuel, being obliged to have it in wagons), close to and covering the line of entrenchments before Petersburg, Va. Regiment was very reduced in numbers. "G" Co. mustered only 13 men. Whole number rep[or]ted for duty in reg. About 85 to 90. The principle object…best made and best kept but in camp was occupied by Sergt. Rumney, Corpl. Welch, Corpl. Pattison and later by Bartlett, standing at the head of street of "G" Co.--Jas. Wm. P…The "Crater" was on our left and Ft. Stedman near our rt.", pencil on paper, unframed, 8-1/2 x 5-5/8 in.; found loose in a sketchbook. Toning, handling grime, cut into left edge, paper present.
