OIL ON BOARD PORTRAIT OF DR. MENEES, MD19th century oil on board oval portrait of Dr. Thomas Menees, MD (TN, 1823-1905) depicting Dr. Menees seated with partially opened book. Brass plate attached to the frame reads: "Thomas O. Menees, MD, Dean of The Medical Department, Vanderbilt, 1875 - 1895". Housed in an oval gilt wood frame. Sight - 29" H x 24" W. Framed - 36" H x 31" W. Biography: Born in Davidson County, TN, Menees served in the Tennessee State Senate in 1857. He represented Tennessee in the First Confederate States Congress and the Second Confederate States Congress from 1862-1865, during the Civil War. Trained a physician and working in Springfield and Nashville, he also served as the dean of the merged medical departments of the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt University between 1875-1895.

Canvas laid down on aluminum backing, losses to canvas perimeter, primarily upper left margin and lower right margin near the brass plate. Visible inpainting to left background of subject's face.

Framed: 10 5/8" x 10 5/8". Biography (Courtesy of the Knoxville Museum of Art): Richard Jolley was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1952 and as a youth, he moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He began his art training at Tusculum College in Greenville, Tennessee in 1970, studying under noted glass artist Michael Taylor. After receiving his B.F.A. from George Peabody College in Nashville (now part of Vanderbilt University), Jolley continued graduate studies at North Carolinaís Penland School of Crafts, under the instruction of studio glass artist Richard Ritter. He currently maintains a studio in Knoxville. To date, Jolleyís work is represented in more than 33 public collections, including the Carnegie Museum of Art; the Corning Museum of Glass; the Frederick Weisman Art Foundation, Los Angeles, the Knoxville Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. JEAN JOSEPH DELVIN OIL ON CANVAS SEASCAPEJean Joseph Delvin (Belgium, 1853 - 1922) oil on canvas seashore scene depicting a woman in Edwardian dress seated on horseback, standing at the edge of the water and gazing out toward sailing vessels on the horizon. Signed and dated "Delvin, 18?8" lower left. Housed in a carved gilt wood frame with painted wooden liner. Sight - 30 1/2" H x 43 1/4" W. Framed - 41" H x 53 1/2" W. Biography: Jean-Joseph Delvin attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, studying under Theodore Joseph Canneel. He eventually taught at the academy and became its director from 1902-1913. He specialized in animal scenes , particularly ones with horses. Provenance: descended in the family of in-vitro fertilization pioneer Dr. Pierre Soupart of Hainaut, Belgium, who came with his family to this country in 1962 and became a member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Vanderbilt University Medical School, where he worked for the rest of his life.

THOMAS B. ALLEN PAINTINGThomas B. Allen (Tennessee/New York, 1928-2004) oil on canvas painting of a boy holding a bag of marbles, standing against a wall plastered with paper signs. Wide stained wood frame. Signed upper right and dated 1950. 29-3/4" x 21-3/4" sight, 37" x 29-1/4" framed. Biography: Nashville-born illustration artist and painter Thomas B. Allen studied at Vanderbilt University and the Art Institute of Chicago. His illustration work appeared in numerous publications including Life, McCalls, and The New Yorker. In 1959 he illustrated a story for Esquire Magazine about bluegrass singers Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, which led to a close and longtime collaboration, including seventeen country music album covers. Allen earned a New York Art Directors Club Gold Medal and a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators. He taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the Parsons School of Design, Syracuse University, and the Ringling School of Art and Design. A retrospective of his work, organized by the recording artist Marty Stuart, was held from 2000-2002 at the Grand Ole Opry.

This lot features a large number of loose studio and candid albumen prints, CDVs, cabinet cards, and other photographs dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, of mostly unidentified subjects. Notable Giers images include three African American children shooting marbles; 3 members of the Robert E. Lee Chapter of the Confederate Veterans from Fort Worth, Texas (standing with flag and a child) at the 1904 National Convention held in Nashville; members of the Vanderbilt University Football Team on the practice field, and members of other sport teams. There are a few photos of African American subjects, some images of Otto Giers and family including daughter Hunter Giers Hicks, and a CDV of a young Native American boy stamped on back for Jackson Bros. Studios, Lincoln, Nebraska. One photograph (framed) depicts Somerset Edward O'Brien Kevil-Davis, British Army: Major Gordon Highlanders Order of Medjidif, with military medals, photograph taken by James Ewing, Aberdeen & Braemar. Photographs vary in sizes from c. 4" H x 2 1/2" W to 11" H x 14" W. Lot also includes a photographic album of CDVs portraits, primarily by C. C. Giers, but a few are by European studios such as Hanns Hanfstaengl, Berlin, and Enlenstein Photograph, Leipzig, of men, women, and children. Two examples of Post-Mortem photography, one of a woman, one of a baby, are included towards the back of the album. Album brown leather embossed with gilt, with white glass beads on covers and metal fasteners, gilt picture boards inside. PHILIP PERKINS O/B ABSTRACTPhilip Perkins (American/Tennessee, 1907-1970) oil on board abstract painting, untitled, with geometric elements rendered in shades of maroon, orange, gray and white. Simple whitewashed wood frame. Board 10 3/8" x 8 3/8", frame 11 1/4" x 9 1/4". Biography: Philip Perkins received critical acclaim for his geometric, cubist influenced work of the 1940s and his abstract expressionism in the 1950s. He was born in Waverly, Tennessee and studied at Vanderbilt University and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1932 he moved to Paris, France, where he studied under Jean Marchaud, Louis Marcoussis, and Fernand Leger. In 1934 he exhibited at the Salon D'Automne and the Salon de Tuileries. In 1940 he moved to New York City and in 1947 participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition. He spent seven years teaching art at the University of Tennessee in Nashville (1948-1955) but went back to Europe for several more years before returning to Nashville in 1961. W. Lawless & Co.; Armstrong Furniture; I. Gans Notions & Toys; an unidentified church, and "The Grand" (likely a hotel). 27 photographs in all. Most are attributed to Nashville photographer Otto Giers, who began a project in the 1880s to document his city, some have signatures lower right of photographers believed to have been working with Otto Giers during this time. Olivet cemetery (9 images), National Cemetery (18 images), the City Cemetery (9 images), Woodland Street Suspension Bridge, Insane Asylum (10 images),Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad Depot, School for the Blind, Hume School, Howard School, James K. (Large creased area with tears at upper edge), left corner missing, grime/possible mildew to left edge). 4th group: more than 2 dozen loose albumen images. Identifiable subjects include the old James K. Polk mansion (no longer standing), Broadway, Fort Negley "about 1886", Fort Morton " about 1886," State Capitol, Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis Rail car, Nashville riverfront with steamboats, the Pontoon Bridge and Ferry used while building the Woodland Street Bridge, scenes of the great Nashville snowstorm, Union Street decked out for the visit of president Grover Cleveland, the Andrew Jackson monument at the State Capitol; images from the building of bridges, and " The Cole Residence (later Medical Arts Building)". 5th group: 14 illustrated images of Nashville architectural landmarks (possibly taken from a book and based on Giers photographs) and 3 early 20th century reprint photographs of Civil War officers camped out by a tent (likely taken by Giers during the Union occupation of Nashville) along with 2 illustrated images of elevations of Ft. Negley. Approximately 100 total images. Note: Carl C. Giers immigrated from Germany and arrived in Nashville in 1852. He set up a photo gallery downtown, photographing many Nashville occupants and visitors - including notable Civil War figures during the city's Union Occupation. C.C. Giers passed away in 1877 and the studio was sold, but his son, Otto Giers, only 19 when his father died, took up the trade and continued it as part of the firm Thuss, Kollein and Giers. In 1885, he undertook a series of documentary photographs of Nashville sites (some of which are represented here). Some pages have images clipped, but the majority are intact with light discoloration and edge chipping (mostly affecting the rigid album boards). All images are adhesive-mounted to album pages, which have become brittle. 17 pages have come unbound from spine. Leather exterior of album is extremely worn, including the spine.

Paper and string bound book reporting the activities of the Nashville Public Schools of past year, submitted by J. F. Pearl, Superintendent, to the Board of Education, detailing information concerning subjects such as the deaths of the teachers and pupils, discipline and attendance, and examples of questions to be answered by candidates of the High Schools regarding English Grammar, Geography, Arithmetic, History, Latin, Watts on the Mind, and Spelling. Preceding the example questions, Pearl closes his report by repeating the petition "Give us a commodious school house on College Hill, and an Examination Hall upon the lot adjoining the Hume Building". 8 3/8" H x 5 1/4" W. 2nd item: Sepia toned photograph depicting "North on Gay St." after a "Big Fire at Knoxville, Tenn--April 8th 1897, "Hotel Knox" started". He spent seven years teaching art at the University of Tennessee in Nashville (1948-1955) but went back to Europe for several more years before returning to Nashville in 1961.
Condition:
Overall good condition, professionally conserved and lined. Two faint vertical lines visible surface in upper and lower left and right quadrants. UV light reveals scattered touch ups in all quadrants, and a repaired 1 1/2' horizontal tear to lower center (in the middle of the red-tinged shape). Frame in good overall condition with two faint dark vertical horizontal lines to lower mat.

ALAN LEQUIRE BRONZE, SEATED FIGURE READINGAlan Lequire (American/Tennessee, b. 1955) bronze sculpture depicting a nude woman lounging on an abstracted chair or sofa and reading a book, with her legs crossed. Signed "Lequire" in oval to back of chair and numbered 2/12. 13 1/2" H x 14" W x 6" D. Biography: Alan LeQuire began his artistic career at the age of eleven, when he crafted his first objects in copper and tin. His early influences include Tennessee sculptors Olen Bryant, Puryear Mims, and William Edmondson. Lequire graduated from Vanderbilt University and spent a year of apprenticeship with Milton Hebald, an American sculptor living in Italy, and afterward studied figurative sculpture with Peter Agostini in the MFA program of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Lequire is best known today for his monumental public sculptures in Middle Tennessee including "Athena" at the Nashville Parthenon and "Musica" on Music Row.

A Chinese Silver Inlaid Bronze Figure of a Buffalo Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) or earlier modeled standing foursquare its thick arched neck supporting a forward facing head with an open mouth upright alert ears and a two curved horns its tail elegantly curled upward with overall stylized loop inlay height 6 3/4 in. length 9 in. Provenance: With Chauncey P. Lowe Orlando FL; to current owner. The Chauncey P. Lowe collection of Chinese art is considered one of the most distinguished in Florida. A 1997 Orlando Sentinel art review quotes Cornell Fine Arts Museum director Arthur Blumenthal: "Lowe's collection is one of the country's ''most comprehensive private collections '' and it is indeed an effective survey of the variety of three-dimensional Chinese art across its long history." Portions of Lowe's collection have been exhibited at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum Rollins College and the Fine Arts Gallery Vanderbilt University among other institutions.
