JACOB EICHHOLTZ OIL PORTRAIT OF
JACOB EICHHOLTZ OIL PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON.Rare and Important Jacob Eichholtz Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting of George Washington. Original and untouched. Unsigned. (Lancaster and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1776-1842). So called Stuart's Vaugn-type portrait. We know that Eichholtz traveled to Boston to meet Stuart sometime in 1809-1810, sponsored by William Barton of Lancaster, who sought to advance Eichholtz's career. While in Boston Eichholtz observed the work of Stuart, sat at Stuart's easel, and learned all that could be gathered in the space a few short weeks. Shortly after returning to Lancaster, Eichholtz presented William Barton, Esq. with a small copy of a Stuart portrait of George Washington, a portrait which I believe Eichholtz would have painted in Stuart's studio. Barton had served under Washington, and even been offered a territorial governorship by Washington. Thus, it is easy to imagine that Barton would cherish a portrait of his commander-in-chief as a token of Eichholtz's appreciation for sponsoring his Boston sojourn. It is also quite likely that while in Boston Stuart confided in Eichholtz that one of his major portraits of Washington hung in the home of Lancastrian, Alexander Scott. As you know-though the work of Ellen Miles, scholar of the work of America's premier portrait painter of the Early Republic, Gilbert Stuart,--Stuart's Vaughn-type portrait of Washington is one of his most famous. Stuart made many copies of the Vaughn portrait, one of which was for Lancastrian Alexander Scott, who resided on the second block of North Duke Street, Lancaster, one block from the Eichholtz residence. At some point after returning to Lancaster from Boston, Eichholtz no doubt visited the home of Scott and made his copy of Stuart's painting. I believe it is likely that he painted it as early as 1810, but certainly with a few years of that date. I base my conviction on several observations. The canvas is of the type frequently cited as having been used by Eichholtz. It is a rough, rather coarse weave and consists of a sewn-together piece of fabric. The stretchers are almost precisely as described by Theodor Siegl in his essay on Eichholtz's techniques in Rebecca Beal's 1969 work "Jacob Eichholtz, 1776-1842, Portrait Painter of Pennsylvania". They are not mitered, about 2-5/8" wide, and deeply planed on the inner edge. The underpainting seems to be of a vermillion hue, known on several of his works. The flesh tones and the figure itself are handled in a manner consistent with his early work and pre-dates his more accomplished and sophisticated work from the 1820s-1830s. Finally, the frame is right out of his common choice of frames. Although we do not know the frame's maker, the frame bares evidence of former comer decorations consistent with the frames found today on many of his works. LancasterHistory.org is pleased to be the caretakers of almost 100 of Eichholtz's works, the largest collection in any museum. Based on my knowledge of each of those works, my extensive study of his work as part of my doctoral dissertation on the artist, and based on my exposure to countless other paintings by Eichholtz as curator of a major retrospective of his work in 2003, I am as certain as I have ever been, that this is the work of Jacob Eichholtz, portrait painter of Pennsylvania. Thomas R. Ryan, Ph.D., President & CEO Lancaster County Historical Society & President James Buchanan's Wheatland. This painting is listed in Rebecca Beal's 1969 work "Jacob Eichholtz, 1776-1842, Portrait Painter of Pennsylvania" page 245, # 855. Never before offered at auction, from a prominent Lancaster County Family. Canvas measures 29-1/2" x 24", in a gilt molded frame 35-1/2" x 31-3/4" overall. Condition: : Original and untouched, minor wear, in need of professional cleaning.

ONE PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED
ONE PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED JOHN J[AMES] AUDUBON, ON WOVE PAPER, TO COLONEL JOHN JAMES ABERT, FROM NEW YORK, JULY 17, 1837One page autograph letter signed John J[ames] Audubon, on wove paper, to Colonel John James Abert, from New York, dated July 17, 1837 New York, July 16, 1837 My Dear Friend. - Passing through Philadelphia, I discovered that there is deposited in the library of the American Philosophical Society of that City, the manuscript of General William Clark, written while travelling from the Atlantic to the shores of the Pacific Ocean; and found that a vast deal of the Ornithological matter was embodied in that said M/S. - Now in applying to my worthy friend, John Vaughn Esq., he told me that these papers had been deposited at the Library of which he has the care, by our Government, and that he could not lend them out. I have thought that by writing to you on this subject, you perhaps would assist me by speaking of my wishes to the President, and Secretaries of the different Departments, and that for the sake of my work on Ornithology, you could obtain leave to have the M/S of Wm. Clark placed in my hands for a few months in London, where I would copy all such parts, as an intimately accounting with Zoology; (not a word of which has been published) and that these papers might with safety be received by me through the medium of our Minister at London to whom I vouch safe to return the whole as I receive them. - Try and if this is possible, manage this [indistinct] for me. -remember me kindly to your family - to Mr. Woodbury who is also an excellent friend of mine, to Mr. Butler and Mr. Poinsett and believe me even your most truly obliging friend and servant to Col. J. J. Abert, Washington City. John J. Audubon P.J. O. Verso: P. S. Please to write to me at London 4 Wingate Street, Cavendish Square Or Care of Robt. Havell, Engraver 77 Oxford Street, London We sail this morning for Liverpool in the Packet Ship the England Provenance: Provenance: By descent within a New England Family. This remarkable letter highlights John James Audubon's foucused desire to gather ornithological information from all manner of sources as he compiled The Birds of America. Audubon composed this letter the same day he left to travel to London to join his wife and to meet with Robert Havell, Jr., the engraver primarily responsible for the elephant folio edition of The Birds of America.
