Royal Victorian Silver Gilt and
Royal Victorian Silver Gilt and Coral Paper Knife, unmarked but London, 1841-1859, by Emanuel Brothers, the gilt blade with shell-mounted hilt and gadrooned ferrule, the coral handle fancifully carved in the form of a putto atlas, a serpent and a bough, all following the natural shape of the coral and forming a ring finial, engraved, on the blade, with the cypher of Queen Victoria, l. 7-1/4", presented in the original tan velvet- and satin-lined box of Emanuel Brothers, l. 9". This lot is accompanied by a handwritten note identifying the item as the personal property of Queen Victoria, and given after her death by her daughter, Princess Beatrice, to Miss Clement Smith. An unidentified sale catalogue clipping further explains that the knife was from the Queen's seaside residence Osborne House, Isle of Wight. Princess Beatrice of Battenberg (1885-1944) served as Governor of the Isle of Wight from 1896 until her death, although Osborne House itself was made a gift to the state by King Edward VII, and Princess Beatrice sold her smaller residence there - Osborne Cottage - in 1912.
