LARGE VIKING STEEL AXE HEADNorthern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A sizable forged-steel axe head with a rectangular hafting shaft and a tall, thick neck. The lengthy blade head - along with its curved underside and sharpened edge - is of a more utilitarian form that would excel at chopping or shaping materials like wood, mud bricks, or large animal carcasses. Though meant for everyday work, any Viking could brandish an axe like this example for battle if the need arose. Size: 8.375" L x 1.625" W x 3.375" H (21.3 cm x 4.1 cm x 8.6 cm)

Condition:
Minor nicks to blade, hafting shaft, and neck, with minor pitting and oxidation, otherwise intact and very good. Covered with dark stabilization material to mitigate oxidation. Nice patina throughout.

Wilsons of this form have been dubbed the "Viking Rig" due to their distinctly high heads that look like Viking ships. The carving features incised raised wings.
Taken down to mostly original paint with moderate gunning wear neck cracks, one of which has been reset.
