Two steins with raised figural scenes and ornate pewter lids. First stein holds 1 liter, has a vine handle, an embracing couple by a small village reading "Und muss Abchied nehmen.", "Abibied", and Morgen muss ich fort von bier" and is impressed on the base "Germany". The second stein holds 1/2 liters and includes both a tavern scene and ivy decoration reading "383" and is impressed on the base "383 5". MEASUREMENTS: First stein is 11-1/4" and the second stein is 9-5/8". CONDITION: First stein has light crazing, minor rubs to brown paint, and 3 tight hairline cracks to rim of stein. Second stein has no defects noted.

ROBERT A. WILSON PHOENIX BOOKS PORTFOLIO: A unique collection of correspondence from Robert A. Wilson, proprietor of the noted Phoenix Book Shop in New York and William Plumley. Included in the portfolio are letters, photographs of Wilson with Marianne Moore, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, John Weiners and more. Also included are 12 short stories by Wilson, and the book ''The Phoenix Book Shop, A Nest of Memories''. Robert Alfred ''Jump'' Wilson was born in Baltimore in 1922. Following service in the U.S. Army and the diplomatic corps, he eventually became the fifth owner of the Phoenix Book Shop in Greenwich Village and ran the shop from 1962 to its closure in 1988. He is the bibliographer of Gertrude Stein, Gregory Corso, and Demise Levertov, as well as the publisher of forty-three books including the work of Gertrude Stein, Marianne Moore, W.H. Auden, Allen Ginsberg, Elizabeth Bishop, and Richard Wilbur. His autobiography is entitled ''Seeing Shelley Plain'' (2001). From the William Plumley Estate.

Repaired 3'' tear horizontal approximately 1'' above signature minor in-painting found in sky above sun and small spot in sky area in middle horizontal 1/3 of painting. Has minor paint loss along frame edge on bottom of image. Lacquer has yellowed surface grime over entire image would benefit from cleaning and conservation. The concept of utility is one of accommodation and collaboration between maker and user. In my work, I explore the symbiotic relationship of form, containment and surface decoration. I make pots to serve, to heighten daily experience and through the action of use, mediate between art and life.” - Katrina Chaytor -Katrina Chaytor is an internationally renowned ceramic artists, best known for her hand-built functional ware. Her work is held in private and public collections in Canada, the US and China.Katrina Chaytor was born St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1962. She received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax in 1983 and her MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, New York, in 1986. Chaytor has participated in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally and, in 2007, was one of ten Canadian ceramic artists invited to participate in a month-long residency at the Fule International Ceramics Art Museums at FuPing, Shaanxi, China. Chaytor has been a permanent member of the Ceramics faculty at the Alberta College of Art and Design since 2001. She has lectured and taught workshops both nationally and internationally, and is the recipient of several awards and grants, including the Award of Honour from the Alberta Craft Council in 2010.Chaytor’s work is of slab construction, incorporating complex patterns onto her surfaces with plaster moulds and accentuating them with luminous glazes. Early 20th C. African Dan Wood Divination Mask: West Africa, Ivory Coast / Liberia, Dan peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A remarkable hand-carved wood divination mask of intriguing form. The stylized visage presents rectangular, openwork eyes beneath a projecting brow, a broad nose that spans to the width of the face, and a huge mouth that extends forwards showing thin lips and a slender tongue. A large pair of ears flanks the fascinating countenance, each adorned by a relief cross on their outer sides, possibly representing ceremonial scarification, and 4 risen vertical bands decorate the brow. The periphery of the brow is additionally embellished by 13 risen dots. Boasting a lustrous, mocha-hued surface, the abstract vizard is adorned with red and brown pigments, as well as tan-colored desiccated earth and the periphery of the verso is lined with a series of annular drill holes, allowing the piece to be strapped to a costume. Early 20th C. African Igbo Polychrome Wood Helmet Mask: West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful carved-wood helmet mask, known as an agbohbho mmwo or maiden's mask, with a cheerful guise painted in a chalky-white hue symbolic of one who dwells in the realm of the spirits and additionally embellished by pigments of red and black. Representing idealized youthful beauty, the vizard presents the stylized features of slit-form eyes surrounded by an abstract design, semi-circular ears, a slender, straight nose, and a large smile displaying 2 rows of square teeth. The coiffure is skillfully incised with decorative motifs of concentric circles and parallel striations, while an openwork arch rises from the center as a type of crest flanked by a pair of smaller ornamental arches on each side of the head. A series of petite drill holes line the mask's periphery, allowing it to be strapped to a costume and worn. Size: 11. 5" L x 8. 5" W x 19. 75" H (29. 2 cm x 21. 6 cm x 50. 2 cm). . The Igbo are best known for these Maiden Spirit masks which are danced by men at agricultural festivals as well as funerals of important members of the village, intended to capture the purity, youth, grace, and beauty of deceased maidens. These men who dance the agbohbho mmwo masks also traditionally wear colorful fiber costumes to entertain with performances featuring exaggerated versions of traditional women's dances. . . 18TH CENTURY POLYCHROME DECORATED SHRANK: Dated 1778. This armoire, or schrank as it is called in Germany. It came from Stein, a small village in the county of Appenzell, Switzerland. With the exception of some restoration of the crown & bottom moldings, this piece remains in its original state. It is representative of country folks furniture used widely in the late 1700's and 1800's in Switzerland, southern Germany, & Austria. Similar pieces were brought by immigrants to Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania Dutch). This armoire was imported into the U.S. by the Country Shop in 1970, and it was acquired by Mr. & Mrs. L.W. Redd in the summer of 1971. Approx. 67.25'' h x 62.50'' l x 23.75'' w.CONDITION: Magnet added to left door. Age cracks, loss at top left moulding, wear commensurate with age and use.
