Governor of Virginia, 1751-1758) part-printed document, signed, August 15, 1754 (the 28th year of George II's reign) appointing a commission to investigate and try the case of Violet and Beck, two female slaves, accused of "having prepared and administered a poisonous medicine," to the son of one of their masters, signed by Dinwiddie, l.r., with portion of the colony's seal; folio, 15 x 11 3/4 in., by sight, framed.

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA WASHINGTON MONUMENT: CASED 1/4 PLATE TINTYPE PHOTO OF ATTRACTIVE SOUTHERN WOMAN, CA. 1850 Middle Aged Woman of substantial means, in the original gutta perha case featuring the bronze equestrian portrait of Gen. George Washington designed by Thomas Crawford and completed under the supervision of Randolph Rogers after Crawford's death, opened in 1849. Features four prominent Virginians around the plinth who played critical roles in the American Revolutionary War. 5" x 4". Case is fine, photo has damage to small area in background.

Hinges with cracks, corners slightly rubbed (one bumped), scattered light to moderate foxing throughout, map with extensive offsetting and browning, "First hot-pressed edition" on title page abraded and faint.

VERY RARE CONFEDERATE RECRUITING BROADSIDE FOR THE 13TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY Charleston, Kanawha County (West Virginia), July 25, 1862, offering a $25 advance on a bounty paid to able-bodied men willing to enlist. A period manuscript note at the bottom of the sheet names the 13th Virginia, which went on to fight under Lt. General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, himself a native of Western Virginia. Presented behind glass in a vintage rustic oak frame (13-1/2 x 13-1/2 in.).

New Market Virginia sampler, yellow house with fence flanked by two large trees, small outbuilding or gate to left of house, six-line top panel, stitched on bottom line "Virginia Miles Age 12 years New Market March 8th 1844", inner sawtooth border, strawberry vine outer border, silk on linen, 16 x 17 in.; wood frame with gilt cove molding. Fading, browning of linen, some loose threads, stretched over cardboard and glued to the back, some discoloration to glued-down areas. The 1850 U.S. Census lists Virginia Miles as 17 years old and living in Shenandoah, Virginia. Marriage records from Virginia indicate that she married George Bouse, a Methodist minister, in 1851. They lived for a time in Maryland and later in Taylor, Centre County, Pennsylvania.
