A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS MANUSCRIPT, "BLACK VOMIT" LETTER TO...A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS MANUSCRIPT, "BLACK VOMIT" LETTER TO COLONEL THOMAS WILLIAM WARD FROM JONATHAN HULL, HOUSTON, AUSTIN AND WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 12-16, 1844 hand inscribed ink on paper with wax seal, Jonathan Hull in Houston writes to Col. Thomas William Ward about a "Black Vomit" sickness that swept Houston and the loss of his nephew, detailing financial credits, tallies debts and remaining owed bills, ending with that the sickness has scared the country people from coming to town and there is, "no prospect of renting anymore stores.," verso Jonathan Hull ends by, "acknowledging the last of a piece of your wedding cake," addressed to Col. Thomas W. Ward in Austin, Texas, and received in Washington on September 16, 1844 with a "Free" postage mark. 12 1/2" x 15" Note: Col. Thomas W. Ward married Susan L. Marston, a widow with two children, on June 20, 1844, and according to the record herein, the wedding cake was delicious, plenty and surprisingly lasted some time. Provenance: Estate of Dr. Paul E. Schutts, Houston, Texas.
