Known by the pet name "Bibi", the child was a son of J.M. Lalouette, who ran a small hotel and restaurant at 5 rue de l'Odéon in Paris. From a series of portraits Whistler made in 1858-59. A Miniature Painting on Bone or Ivory Signed "Boucher" The 2-3/4"D painting is framed in a gilt metal inset in a rectangular brown wood frame apprx. 5" x 5" backed with paper printed in Italian. The subject is a favorite of Francois Boucher who painted bird catchers in various of his compositions though the inscription of the name is most probably intended as an "homage". A pretty young couple with small yellow birds in a garden setting discussing the birdcage before them.
