SOUTH CAROLINA SILVERSMITHS 1690-1860. Charleston SC: Charleston Museum 1991. pp.47. Other Notes: Copy of handwritten family history states: Ann Gadsden Adger married Harry Morris Grimball. Harry's great grandfather was George Trenholm. Harry's great great grandfather was the Morris who signed the Declaration of Independence. Ann and Harry owned Pine Barren Plantation on Edisto and their grandparents lived on the Battery. The Adger's owned a fleet of ships. Special Note: George Alfred Trenholm was born in Charleston South Carolina. At the age of sixteen he left school and went to work for a major cotton broker John Fraser & Co. in Charleston. By 1853 he was head of the company. When the Civil War broke out John Fraser & Co. became the Confederate government's overseas banker and financed its own fleet of blockade runners. One of these may have been the SS Georgiana sunk in naval action near Charleston SC in March 1863. Trenholm was appointed Confederate Secretary of the Treasury on July 18 1864. He fled Richmond with the rest of the government in April 1865. Due to illness he resigned on April 27 1865. He was later briefly imprisoned at Fort Pulaski near Savannah Georgia. Condition: Frame retains 70% of the original blue finish thinning on the backstrap and high points. Barrel retains 30% original blue finish with the sides of barrel turning brown. Grips are excellent.

Smith & Wesson No. 1 Second Model .22 short cal. 3.25'' barrel S/N 79688. Silver-plated frame blue barrel rosewood grips. Condition: Good condition with a very good but lightly pitted bore. It retains ca 70% original silver finish while the rest of the gun has a brown patina. It has a weak locking spring and the cylinder does not lock up properly. The barrel is a little loose and the screws are all buggered up.

Retains most of its blueing and silver plating.

Smith & Wesson First Model American US Marked Revolver .44 centerfire cal. 8" barrel ?S/N 406.?Single line Smith & Wesson markings on top of barrel with US on the back of barrel. Listed in SA Records.?"A" on the bottom flat of the barrel;?"A" on one flute and a "P" on another flute of the cylinder. An "A" on the side of top strap.? Three nice notches have been cut into the backstrap.?Walnut grips with matching numbers on the inside of the right grip. Condition: Barrel cylinder and frame?are grey mixed with pitting.?Grips with some nicks and dings.

PRESENTATION SMITH AND WESSON MODEL NO. 1 SECOND ISSUE REVOLVER. .22 short caliber seven-shot cylinder 3 3/16'' octagonal barrel blued and silver-plated finish rosewood grips. S/n 24856. The backstrap is engraved ''M.S. Forbes Co. H 25th Reg. Mass. V. from J.H. Southwick.'' Private Forbes enlisted in September 1861 and served until his regiment mustered out in October 1864. The 25th Massachusetts spent most of its time in North Carolina and Virginia. Retains about 50% original bluing and plating marks and engraving still clear action smooth bore fairly clean.
