HALFANGELO GARINO (ITALIAN 1860-1945)
HALF LENGTH PORTRAIT OF MONA CAIRD Signed, inscribed and dated 'Nice 1918', oil on canvas89cm x 71cm (35in x 28in)Provenance: Henryson-Caird Collection, Cassencarie HouseNote: Mona Caird was born Alice Mona Alison on 24 May, 1854 to an affluent family on the Isle of Wight. Also known by her married name Alice Mona Henryson-Caird, she was a writer and essayist dubbed a ‘priestess of revolt’ by the mainstream press at the time. A notorious First Wave feminist writer, she wrote seven published novels, short stories, a travel book, tracts on anti-vivisection, and many articles on the ‘Woman Question’ and other social and political issues. Her writings challenged Victorian conceptions of femininity, filial duty, marriage and domesticity. In 1877, at the age of 23, Mona married James Alexander Henryson-Caird, who was eight years her senior. His estate, Cassencarie in Kirkcudbrightshire on the South coast of Scotland, figures prominently in her fictional works. Despite clearly being taken with the romantic Gothic mansion and its surrounding idyllic countryside, which provided the setting for a number of her novels, the stifling traditional life that came with it was not to her liking. This resulted in her only spending two months of the year there, while spending the rest in London or travelling abroad mostly on her own, with her husband stayin at Cassencarie to manage the estate. They lived parallel but distinctly different lives, with separate circles of friends that reflected their differing interests and views on specific issues. Their marriage produced a son, Alister James, who was raised mainly in Scotland with his father, and whose subsequent military career was at odds with Mona’s beliefs and writings. Her work stimulated widespread discussion of such controversial subjects as undesired marital sex, birth control, unwanted pregnancy, single motherhood, wages for housework, public child care, free relationships and the right to adultery after marital breakdown. Mona Caird’s importance as an early feminist writer has recently been re-discovered by academics and Feminist scholars and her works provoke ongoing discussion on women’s issues.

FINE GEORGE II MAHOGANY COMB BACK WINDSORFINE GEORGE II MAHOGANY COMB BACK WINDSOR ARMCHAIR43 1/4 x 30 x 23 1/2 in., height of seat 17 1/2 in.
Note: An identical Windsor chair is illustrated in Cotton, Bernard D., The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, Suffolk: Antique Collectors Club Publishing, 1990, p. 46, fig. TV17. This identical Windsor model is also illustrated in a Vernay & Jussel, Inc. catalog with an accompanied footnote: The system of roads left by the Roman occupation of Britain had remained, for almost 1,700 years, the basis of land travel in all areas of the island. It was only at the start of the eighteenth century that major improvements and expansion of the roads began, largely due to the impetus of trade requirements. One by-product of this new ease of travel was the pooling in London of talent drawn from the provincial areas. Gifted craftsman were able, as at no time before, to make the journey "up to London", from any part of the Kingdom, and profit from the higher wages and opportunities for advancement in the metropolis. Conversely, as people returned to their homes from a London visit, they carried back with them new ideas and new styles, profoundly influencing local customs.
This intercourse between London and the provinces led to an interesting cross-fertilization of styles, and local craftsman, their talent bred within the framework of an inherited tradition, refined rather than abandoned that tradition in the sophisticated, international atmosphere of the city.
The elegant adaptation of the popular Windsor chair is a product of such exchange. here the native beech, yew and ash have been replaced by imported (an expensive) mahogany. The flat out-scrolling arms and seat, the deeply scrolled brackets to the acanthus carved cabriole legs were all fashionable in the second quarter of the (18th) century. Most remarkable is the use of French scroll toes, so popular in the Rococo, integrated with perfect skill into a purely traditional design. "It is estimated that in 1750, 1 out of every 6 Englishman had had direct contact with the capitol." See Wrigley, " A Simple Model of London's Importance, Past and Present ", No. 37, July 1967.

T'ZU-HSI EMPRESS DOWAGER HN2391 - ROYALT'ZU-HSI EMPRESS DOWAGER HN2391 - ROYAL DOULTON FIGURIN...Designed with regal grace and dignity by Peggy Davies, each figure in the collection is highly complex and richly decorated. Signed by Peggy Davies.
Throughout time there have been women whose impenetrable qualities have brought them awesome power and unrivalled superiority. The beguiling women of the Les Femmes Fatales collection were each made in a limited edition of 750. Designed with regal grace and dignity by Peggy Davies, each figure in the collection is highly complex and richly decorated. When her husband, the Emperor of the Western Palace died in 1861, T'zu-hsi became Regent and remained in power until she died in 1908. Although a ruthless politician, she had a great love of flowers, art and animals. The Les Femmes Fatales series pays tribute to the legendary beauty of history's most notoriously powerful women. - Les Femmes FatalesArtist: Peggy Davies

ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA D6728 - LARGE -ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA D6728 - LARGE - ROYAL DOULTON CHAR...Royal Doulton Character Jug, Antony and Cleopatra D6728 (black, grey, brown coloration). Designed by Michael Abberley. Series: The Star - Crossed Lovers Collection (Two-faced jug), issued: 1985 in a limited edition of 9,500. Size 7.25"H (Large)Marcus Antonius (83 - 30 B.C.) was a skilled soldier and co-ruler of Rome with Caesar's nephew Octavian from 43 to 32 B.C. Cleopatra (68 - 30 B.C.) well known for her charm and beauty, was Queen of Egypt and an ally and lover of Julius Caesar. In 41 BC, Anthony and Cleopatra met and fell in love, marrying in 37 B.C. Anthony gave Cleopatra and their children a share of his Roman Provinces in 34 B.C. a move which enrage Octavian, who waged war on the couple, pursuing them in their defeat to Alexandria. Antony, hearing a false rumor of Cleopatra's death, stabbed himself in grief. He was carried to her and died in her arms. In turn, Cleopatra committed suicide by placing an asp on her chest, apparently from fear of Octavian. The jugs were issued in 1985 in a limited edition of 9,500 pieces. - Star-Crossed Lovers
