WILLIAM AIKEN WALKER (SC/LA, 1838-1921) Wartime Slave Cabin, with Elderly Couple Out Front and Workers in Fields in Background, oil on canvas, initialed lower left and dated 1863, having a second study of the same building verso, housed in the original gilt ribbed cove frame, OS: 14 1/2" x 20", SS: 6 3/4" x 12 1/4". Very good condition, minor frame loss.
Walker was born to an Irish Protestant father who was a prominent Cotton Broker, and a mother of genteel lineage in Charleston, SC. Self-taught, he served in the Confederate Army as a cartographer, began painting full time after the war. Fascinated with the life of the freedmen, he traveled the south recording sharecropper genre scenes. He lived in New Orleans 1876-1905, his most productive period, working from memory and sketches made during the Reconstruction era.
