128. MEISSEN PORCELAIN CANE -19TH CENTURY128. MEISSEN PORCELAIN CANE -19TH CENTURY -STRETCHING P...128. Meissen Porcelain Cane -19th Century -Stretching pistol shaped grip white porcelain handle decorated in cobalt blue with the classic, “Zwiebelmuster” Onion Pattern, ebony shaft with a brass collar and ferrule. Classic feminine cane, intact and with its entire original sparkle. -Meissen porcelain is the first European porcelain. It was successfully produced in a trial firing in 1708 by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus. However after his untimely death Johann Friedrich Böttger, who continued his work, has often been credited with the invention. The Meissen production of porcelain started in 1710 and attracted artists and artisans to establish one of the most famous porcelain manufacturers, still in business as Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH. Its signature logo, the crossed blue sword marks of the arms of Saxony, was introduced in 1720 to protect its production and is one of the oldest trademarks in existence. -H 3 ¼” x 1”, O.L. 37” -$400-$500
111. PORCELAIN AND SILVER CANE -CA.111. PORCELAIN AND SILVER CANE -CA. 1880 -T-SHAPE PORCE...111. Porcelain and Silver Cane -Ca. 1880 -T-shape porcelain knob with an elegantly formed body with asymmetrical extensions in the Baroque taste ending with differently modeled shells and bordures in gentle relief. The dark red knob is set in a finely engraved filigree silver cage with an oval space on the top displaying a colored painted panel with frolicking putti in a garden landscape. The knob is signed with the two blue and crossed “Meissen Swords” under a “T” on the inside of its neck and marked with a“487” in red enamel color on the outer lower rim. Highly desirable and possibly a one-of-a-kind object, this heir of refinement combines luxury, style and character and survived in great condition spare for the panel on the top which was obviously affected by the elements and shows some surface flows. There has been a lot of speculation about the technique used to create this kind of delicate silverwork on fragile core materials like porcelain, glass or stone and the ultimate expert opinion is that it is sophisticated electroplating. -H. 2 ¼” x 2 ¼”, O.L. 36” -$600-$800 -Meissen porcelain is the first European porcelain. MEISSEN PORCELAIN CANECa. 1900-StylizedMEISSEN PORCELAIN CANECa. 1900-Stylized modeled in an early “Bec de Corbin” shape, the handle is finely painted with a flower arrangement on the top and scattered blooms on the body, plain and gilt metal collar, ebony shaft and a horn ferrule. The painting style hints to the famous German manufacture and the vivid colors strengthen our assumptions. Popular in medieval Europe, a “Bec de Corbin”, French for "Crow’s Beak”, was simply another name for a poleaxe. It was borrowed for a certain type of cane handles, fashionable in the 18th Century in France. Meissen porcelain is the first European porcelain. MEISSEN PORCELAIN CANECa. 1880-SmallMEISSEN PORCELAIN CANECa. 1880-Small porcelain knob modeled in a classic Baroque shape with a gently tapering and ribbed body and a slightly widening and scalloped domed top, painted with birds, scattered blooms and gold moriage highlights. This charming knob boasts all the seductive powers of the vitrified material and follows the strict quality control and traditional artisanship that are associated with the brand. It comes with a slender turned and gilt metal ring collar on a rosewood shaft with rich and dark red-brown hues and a horn ferrule. H. 1 ½” x 1 ¼”, O.L. 37 ¾” The tradition of bird painting at Meissen reaches back to the early 18th century. In the beginning, Meissen’s porcelain painters painted stylised images of birds inspired be Eastern Asian porcelain designs. At the same time that chinoiseries began to fall out of fashion, the manufactory’s designs were changing as well: Meissen’s artists increasingly turned to more realistic, naturalistic depictions of native and exotic plants and animals that took their cues from scientific drawings. To this end, in 1733, Johann Joachim Kaendler approved the purchase of 56 copperplate engravings depicting a wide range of birds to be used at the manufactory as a basis for new designs. These images would be used in countless porcelain artworks and motifs starting in the 1740s. The period of “ornithological motifs” may have been brief, however, time and time again, artists have returned to the extensive design archives ever since, and continue to create innovative new designs and reinterpretations that incorporate the artistic style of their era. CAPTURED NAZI WALTHER P38 BRIDGE TOOCAPTURED NAZI WALTHER P38 BRIDGE TOO FARAn important and one-of-a-kind piece of WWII history. This Walther P-38 was taken from a Nazi officer during Operation Market Garden -- a tragic joint Allied military operation that inspired the book (and later, the movie) "A Bridge Too Far." One of the characters from the operation was MAJ Julian Aaron Cook, portrayed by Robert Redford in the 1977 movie. Cook famously led his men across the Waal River, reciting Hail Marys because they were visible to the German guns. He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and promoted to Colonel. The consignor, involved with veterans affairs since the early 1970s, facilitated Cook's (and his family's) attendance at the movie's premiere. As a token of thanks, Cook gave him the Walther. A framed note from Cook to the consignor concludes: "As a memento of that event, please accept this P-38 pistol which I took from a German officer during the course of that operation." Also included is a copy of A Bridge Too Far, signed by Cook, inscribed to the consignor. And, finally, a photograph of Cook holding the pistol -- as the consignor holds the holster -- as he presents the pistol to the consignor.
