REVOLUTIONARY WAR ENGRAVED POWDER HORN, JOHN MORE (NY) 1775A powder horn from the American Revolutionary War, engraved "JOHN MORE his hoRN / SARATOGA SEPTR. 10 1775." To the reverse is a scrimshaw illustration of a rattlesnake, a lion wearing the Georgian crown, and a bird of prey. Wooden end plug and stopper, and leather strap.
Measures 13 1/2" x 5" x 3 1/2".
From the collection of a notable Kansas City doctor, benefactor, and genealogist.
Condition
The horn has several small cavities along the side of the illustrations. General aging. The leather strap is presumably a replacement.

1799 AMERICAN POWDER HORN W/ WOOD & STEEL CAPNorth America, United States, ca. 1799 CE. A hand carved powder horn made from cow horn, with a wooden plug and a steel pin tip. The body is flat and narrow, tapering to the ridges mouth. A rectangular piece of horn is riveted to the wide bottom with iron nails. The lower face is engraved with a scrolling trefoil or cartouche motif and the year "1799." Powder horns were used for holding gunpowder but could also be carved intricately as a type of folk art. This is a nice example with an unusual, compressed shape. Size: 8" L x 3" W (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm)
