BLUE AND WHITE JACQUARD COVERLET Running deer, American eagle, and Capitol building.Archibald Davidson (b. 1771), proprietor of the Ithaca Carpet Factory, wove this blue and white, Figured and Fancy, double- cloth coverlet in 1838. - RARE SILK AND METAL THREAD 'POLONAISE'
RARE SILK AND METAL THREAD 'POLONAISE' RUG, ISFAHANApproximately 6 ft. 3 in. x 4 ft. 2 1/2 in.
Note: The above offered rug is illustrated in F.R. Martin, History of Oriental Carpets before 1800 , Vienna, 1808, plate X. It is described as follows: "The charming carpet that is represented on plate X belongs to Count F. Wachtmeister (late Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chancellor of Universities of Sweden) at Tistad house. For several generations it has been at his mothers, the Wrangel family, and is still called the Wrangel Bridal Carpet, since all the daughters of the house were married standing on it. The first known owner was Count Wachtmeister's mother's great great grandfather, Anton Jacob Wrangler, born 1679, who took and active part in the naval battles in the time of Charles II, and especially distinguished himself in 1719, when with the man-of-war "Wachtmeister" he tried to obstruct the Russians at Sandhamm, but was taken prisoner, and only returned to Sweden in 1722 from Moscow. Later he became an Admiral and was awarded the first Count Wrangel of Sausis."
As early as the 15th century, silk rugs were being produced in Persia. By the 16th century, and certainly by the time of Shah Tahmasp (1524-1576) rugs and carpets were often enriched with a brocading of metal thread. The weaving of such fine silk rugs and brocades continued in the time of Shah Abbas (1587-1628). On ascending to the Safavid Throne he established special workshops in Kashan and Isfahan for the production of fine silk carpets. Though now known to have been made in Persia, these carpets were once believed to be Polish origin and were called "Polonaise" carpets, because one of them featured in the exhibition of 1910 in Munich, bears the arms of the Royal house of Poland. However, a document in the Warsaw archives establishes that it was part of an order executed in Kashan in 1602.
Many silk rugs of the Shah Abbas period were also woven with additional brocaded threads of silver or silver-gilt. Often they were made not only for the Safavid courts, but also as gifts for visiting foreign dignitaries. There are many references to 17th century silk rugs throughout European sources, notably Paul Simon, a Polish Carmelite father visiting Kashan in 1608, who describes rugs of silk, gold, brocades and velvets. John Fryer also visited Isfahan in 1676, tells of rugs "both woolen and silk intermixed with gold and silver, very costly, which are the peculiar manufacture of this country". In 1603 and 1622 there are accounts of a Persian embassy bringing brocaded and silk rugs to Venice, four of which are preserved in the treasury of Saint Mark's Cathedral.

Maksymilian Novak-Zemplinki was born in 1974 in Warsaw, Poland. He graduated with Cum Laude honors from the European Academy of Art (Warsaw, Poland) in 1999. Artist's thoughts: ?In my own work the form is the most important element. When I create a painting, I mainly focus on this first layer. I see abstraction in the forms when observe most of pieces of art, even when a painting is greatly representational. The ?meaning? of my work is often not obvious and can be just as mysterious for me as well as for an observer. I believe the effect is much better when a painting is not calculated from A to Z. There has to be an accident in painting ? the painting lives its own life and should surprise its creator. There are the things that make the piece of art enjoyable to create. There is no denying of the possibility that I unintentionally create a kind of a recorded meaning in my paintings, but I believe that majority of artists do so. In the end, I usually create under the influence of great emotions, therefore, accidentality occurs more frequently and is immediately perceivable. I feel somewhat like the one who has lost his or her memory and tries to bring back the old recollections from the past through painting. It is an incredible feeling.? ? M. Novak-Zemplinski 2007. He left Poland not long after his release in 1982 and continued his work in the United States, first working for the Polish newspaper Nowy Dziennik and later for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker. He returned to Poland in the 1990s and contributed to the Polityka and Nie weeklies. JAN PAWLOWSKI OIL ON CANVAS "IRIS AT WATER'S EDGE"Jan Pawlowski (Polish-American, Contemporary) Oil on Canvas "Iris at Water's Edge" , signed lower left Jan Pawlowski
30 in. x 24 in. Overall 36 in. x 30 in.
Jan Pawlowski was born in Poland in 1949 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1979, he was awarded his “authorization and certification” by the Ministry of Arts and Culture in Warsaw, the ultimate achievement for Polish artists. The award is a judgment of technique, as well as of indefinable artistic values, such as the ability of the work to be seen and felt but not necessarily explained. Immediately after this recognition, Jan was in demand for numerous individual and collective exhibitions. He lived in Paris for two years and has worked in Italy, Monte Carlo, Monaco, Germany, Switzerland, and Holland. He spent 1987 and 1988 in Worcestershire, England, where he had a one-man show.
Pawlowski arrived in the United States in 1988 for a short vacation, which stretched into a longer stay. The country fascinated him. He has painted extensively in Boston, Nantucket, Palm Beach, Naples, New York and Palm Springs. Enjoying the wide open spaces of the country and painting in the style of plein air painters, he records what he sees at the moment by capturing the “here and now,” the immediacy of the fleeting present. Remarkably, this ability is also reflected in his portrait work. Jan if often quoted as saying “Only nature can bring truth to the canvas. One learns technique in school, but one learns truth from nature. Truth is ‘what is.’ Art captures the brief moment of nature’s being.”
