ARTHUR HOEBER (AMERICAN, 1854-1915)ARTHUR HOEBER (AMERICAN, 1854-1915) "THE MEADOW AT SUNSET, 1893" Oil on canvas. Signed 'Arthur Hoeber 1893' (lower right). Period giltwood frame.
Catalogue Note: Arthur Hoeber, a prolific writer, illustrator and landscape painter, was born in New York City. From boyhood, he displayed a particular talent for drawing and sketching, and continually practiced in water colors. One of his pictures was accepted by the American Water Color Society when he was only fourteen years old. Hoeber studied in the night schools of Cooper Union and then entered the Art Students League, where he studied under James Carroll Beckwith.
In 1881, Hoeber set off for Europe with letters of introduction from the noted actor Lew Wallack to his brother-in-law Sir John Everett Millais. Millais recommended that Hoeber study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome and then with Gustave Courtois. During his six years there he became an active member of the colony of American artists in residence. Like them he summered in Normandy and Concarneau, Brittany. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1883, and showed again two years later.
Upon his return to the states Hoeber was a regular exhibitor at the National Academy of Design (he later became an Associate Member), received a prize at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901. He held memberships in the Salmagundi Club, the Players and Lotos Clubs. He spent numerous summers on Cape Cod and Long Island where he showed a particular interest in sunsets and marshlands.
The turn of the century saw Hoeber settled in Nutley, New Jersey. He became the most prominent landscapist of a growing community of artists there. During this period Hoeber wrote rather prolifically on the arts and was the art critic for the New York Times. He made regular contributions to the New York Globe, Harper's Weekly and various other leading monthly magazines as well.

Leo Gestel (Netherlands,1881-1941), Dutch painter, experimented with cubism, expressionism, futurism and post-impressionism, among theleading artists of Dutch modernism; ; 10.5 inches x 12 inches. With a wide-ranging practice that spanned media, Gestel’s work is wildly eclectic, shifting through movements and styles such as Cubism,Expressionism, Futurism, and Post-Impressionism. Perhaps the unifying thread throughout the artist’s work is his recurring affinity for portraiture, wherein he often painted and drew himself, hisfriends, and regular models. Born on November 11, 1881 in Woerden, the Netherlands, his early life was burdened with financial woe and commercial advertisement jobs. Gestel was slowly able to launch himself to theforefront of Dutch Modernism, rising to prominence in tandem with his peer Piet Mondrian after the two came in contact with the Parisian avant-garde in the 1910s. Murray (Murry) (American, Georgia, 1908-1988) folk art "spirit writing" painting on paper towel, water color and marker. 35" W x 11 1/8" H (total surface with writing). Biography: John Bunion Murray was an African American artist who grew up in rural Glascock County, GA where he worked as a tenant farmer. At the age of 50, his wife left him, and his eleven grown children had moved from home, leaving Murray in isolation, where he turned to art. He began creating "yard shows" displaying his works on his front porch and into his home. Using predominately primary colors, he expressed his beliefs and emotions through abstract works, each color having consistent meaning. Though he could not read or write, he created his own cursive writing inscribed in many of his works called "spirit writing" which he was able to read through a glass bottle he called "holy water" while praying. His body of work reveals his experience as an African American in the rural south with a unique faith and a surreal imagination.

EDGAR PAXSON (1852-1919) WATER COLOREDGAR PAXSON (1852-1919) WATER COLOR INDIAN C 1890Featured in this lot is this water color on paper of an Indian man circa 1890 by Montana Artist Edgar Paxson born in 1852 and died in 1919. The artwork features a wonderfully and professionally crafted water color on paper construction that depicts a Native American man made to be looking right at the viewer. The artwork is signed in the bottom right hand corner and is dated '90'. Edgar Paxson was an artist of the vanishing West. He was on the frontier just before Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, and his 1877 arrival in Montana occurred when Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce Indians were warring their way through Canada. Paxson became a close friend of Russell, who arrived in Montana in 1880, and the two men became the state's most famous early or pioneer resident artists. Among the things they shared was a mutual pride at being self taught and a love of expressing aspects of Montana's frontier history. Some of his most sought after work are his small watercolors. In 1881, he settled in Butte, where he found more lucrative business, and in 1905, he settled in Missoula. The condition of this watercolor is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this framed watercolor is 18 1/8" x 15 1/8" and the visible artwork measures 9 1/8" x 7 1/4".

After 1962, most Russian unmanned space flights were called Kosmos, and those flights which carried payloads for other nations, or whose data were to be used by other nations, were generally called Interkosmos. The pinnacle of international cooperation in space occurred in 1975 with the Soyuz/Apollo Test Project in which the U.S. Astronauts and the Soviet Cosmonauts rendezvoused in space. Basic to the entire project was the design of the common docking module, jointly conceived by engineers from both countries. The vehicles were successfully docked, and after two days of operations the spacecraft separated. It was a milestone of international cooperation.

In June of 1894, Rice received a Certificate in Industrial Drawings and the following June he received a Certificate in Decorative Painting and Applied Design.
After graduating in 1895, Rice was hired as staff artist for the Philadelphia Times but continued taking classes with Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute. In August 1900, on the invitation of his friend and former cohort Frederick H. Meyer - who would later found the California School of Arts and Crafts (CCA) - he took a job as Assistant Art Supervisor in the Stockton Public Schools in California. It was at this time that he first visited Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and other California landscapes that would be a continual source of inspiration to Rice.
Ten years later Rice relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, seeking an opportunity to become more involved in one of the West Coast's leading Arts and Crafts hubs. He was a part of the Berkeley Art Colony and participated in their Exhibition of California Artists show at the Hillside Club in 1911. After touring Europe in the summer of 1913, he expanded his exposure to printmaking techniques, and that year he took a course in woodblock techniques taught by Ralph H. Johonnot, an associate of Arthur Wesley Dow. As well, he pursued intaglio printmaking, working in drypoint and etching to produce images of his adopted county. Two years later, he found further inspiration in the Japanese woodcuts shown at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition. This cemented his desire to become a woodcut artist, and in 1918 he held his first major exhibition of linocuts and woodcuts at the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco. In 1933, he was awarded 'Best Print' by the California Society of Etchers.
While working as an artist and exhibiting, Rice continued to teach in the Alameda Public Schools as well as summer courses at the CCA and extension courses at UC Berkeley. He would remain an educator for thirty years, teaching painting, drawing, woodcut, metalworking, and leatherworking. In 1929, he received his BFA degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts (now the California College of the Arts). That same year he published his book, Block Printing in the Schools; he would later publish Block Prints: How to Make Them (1941). He counted Pedro de Lemos, Gustave Baumann, Roi Partridge, and the Gearhart sisters among his major influences.
Rice was a member of the Print Makers Society of California, California Society of Etchers, Prairie Printmakers, Northwest Printmakers, and the San Francisco Art Association. He exhibited with the California Water Color Society, Association of American Etchers, Print Club of Philadelphia, and the Wichita Art Association. His work is represented in the collections of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Boston Public Library, Fitzwilliam Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Library of Congress, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, New York Public Library, Oakland Museum of California, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Worcester Art Museum.
William Seltzer Rice died at his home in Oakland, California on August 27, 1963." (The Annex Galleries)
