LARGE JAPANESE HIRADO BLUE AND
LARGE JAPANESE HIRADO BLUE AND WHITE TRUMPET VASE. Large Japanese Hirado blue and white trumpet vase displaying depictions of leafy trees emerging from the opening of the vase and cascading over the edge and onto the body of the vessel. With wonderful applied frog form handles, and blue 'wave' depictions. With a "The Jade Dragon" sticker to the underside. Rhis vase is illustrated in Bushnell's "Oriental Ceramic Art, Plate CXIII" with description stating, "Hirado Blue and white Vase (Hana-ike), 12 3/4" high, of round beaker-shaped form, with a widely flaring mouth, and two solid handles molded in the guise of frogs crawling, as it were, up the neck. It is decorated, inside and out, in underglaze cobalt-blue of grayish tone with a water scene. Two trunks of drooping willow-trees rise from the interior of the vase, decorating its surface with a mass of foliage, and sending, besides, several branches over the rim to cover the upper portion of the exterior with gracefully curving sprays. The lower portion is painted with scrolled waves to indicate the water from which the frogs are supposed to spring. The scene depicted on the vase, it is suggested, remind a Japanese of the famous calligraphist and poeet, Ono no Dofu, who lived during the tenth century A.D., and who is always represented watching frogs leaping out of a stream into willow-trees - illustrative of successful perseverance. There is no mark. It is to be referred, probably, to the beginning of the nineteenth century. CXIII" (page 391). From a Mt Sinai, NY estate. Dimensions: vase measures approx. 13.5" in diameter x 12.25" high. Condition: Good, with light surface scratches and minor dings/dents.
