DANIEL HERNANDEZ MORILLO
DANIEL HERNANDEZ MORILLO (1856-1932) OIL ON PANELDaniel Hernandez Morillo (Peruvian, 1856-1932) Untitled (Young Woman with Watering Can), circa late 19th c. Oil on panel 26" x 17 1/4" A serene Academic oil of a woman tending to her garden, executed by the Peruvian painter Daniel Hernandez during his years in Europe. Signed to the bottom right corner. On the reverse of the wood panel is affixed a Charles Roberson (art supply manufacturer) tag that dates to the 1880s. The reverse also has a faint indistinct numeric written in the artist's hand. Daniel Hernandez was a noted Peruvian painter who spent much of his career working in Rome and Paris, regularly exhibiting at the Salon and maintaining memberships in various art societies. Following the first World War, Peruvian president Jose Pardo requested that he return to his home country to assist in founding a national academy; he obliged, and became the first Director of the Escuela Nacional Superior Autonoma de Bellas Artes in 1919. A region of Tayacaja Province was later named in his honor. In a molded gesso wooden frame that measures 32 1/2" x 24".
Condition
The wood panel has a several-inch vertical split at the top, with very minimal loss. There is scratching to some areas of the paint layer, most notably in the bottom right foreground, in the trees to the left of the woman's head, and around the edges where the board was abrased by the frame's sight edge (no scratches to the figure). The extreme edges of the painting also have several small chips to the paint layer, all of which would be hidden when in frame. No inpainting observed under blacklight.
